I think we really should consider letting go of FATA.
It has no economic, political, geo-political advantage to Pakistan.
I say declare that area no longer a part of Pakistan and create a new border of Pakistan around that area.
Ban all of these people from entering into Pakistan.

Mercenary: I have been thinking about it. I think this deserves a thread by itself. I'll open it when I have some time if someone else doesn't start it soon. What do we need FATA for. They dont consider themselves part of Pakistan anyway. Give them 'freedom," allow them to have their own Shariah Based Model Government, and at the same time, let them defend themselves against whoever may want to fight them.

The people there don't consider themselves Pakistani. They have more allegiance to their tribes than to Pakistan.
And Pakistan has no governmental presence there. They kill our troops, harbor foreign terrorists.
This area has no economical advantage to Pakistan.
It has been a thorn in Pakistan even since its Pakistan was created in 1947.
From the Afghan incursion into Pakistan in 1948 helped by these people, to other two Afghan incursions into Pakistan in 1955 and 1961.
I mean what use is calling this region a part of Pakistan and whatever emanates from this region as Pakistan's problem when this region is not even under our control or jurisdiction.
I say let this region go, deploy our forces around this region and box them in.
When USA and Nato starts bombing them, then they will come running back to Pakistan

Mercenary, it sound tempting, but to do that would mean opening up a can of worms...
There are Pashtun nationalists all across NWFP who will demand that other parts if not the whole of NWFP be included... Then, this would still not stop the Taliban from spreading themselves into the rest of the country because...
1. They dont believe in national borders anyway...
2. They consider all of those areas that are Pashtun including Afghanistan as their turf, so they will still infiltrate into Peshawar and other areas...
And even if FATA were independant, the govt could never seal of this new border considering the terrain.
