"Apple has used IBM’s PowerPC processors since 1994, but will begin a phased transition to Intel’s chips, sources familiar with the situation said. Apple plans to move lower-end computers such as the Mac Mini to Intel chips in mid-2006 and higher-end models such as the Power Mac in mid-2007, sources said.
The announcement is expected Monday at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco, at which Chief Executive Steve Jobs is giving the keynote speech. The conference would be an appropriate venue: Changing the chips would require programmers to rewrite their software to take full advantage of the new processor. "
Re: [News] Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips
“The world associates Intel with Windows,” said Elise Bauer of the Pacifica Group technology consultancy.
“Intel is coupled with Windows to the point where we call it a ‘Wintel’ box. If Apple is now embracing Intel, then there’s some rebranding for both companies, Intel and Apple, to do around that,” she said.
Re: [News] Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips
well this aint much of a good news you know,
apple will be locking thier os to a selected hardware. it will not be like the way windows picks up any hardware you throw at it. apple will give you a list of selected hardware and that's it they wont support anything other then that.
MS's XBOX and Sony's PS are gonna use IBM
While Next Apple's gonna use Intel.
Re: [News] Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips
Plus don’t forget the cost associated with it. Once Apple starts using Intel the price of Mac’s would drop making it an equal contender as IBM clones (Wintel boxes ;)).
Re: [News] Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips
I know the top of the IBM power CPU is running @ 2.7 Ghz liquid cooled . But its not just the speed and power that matters. IBM s power cores could easily outrun P4 cpu s at many things. But I was actually aiming at exclusitivity
Re: [News] Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips
I dont see the prices dropping
Apple will try to maintain its exclusitivity I believe (I hope so)
It s like a Rolls Royce you know. They will try to earn money but not at the cost of exclusitivity. I dont see apple as a direct compition for Microsoft just yet
Re: [News] Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips
Maybe not a direct competition, but an indirect one, specially considering that Mac OS X is built on FreeBSD. Its sure going to put the damper on things for M$.
On a related not, did you read about Brazil throwing out M$??
Re: [News] Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips
Microsoft will be more then happy to have apple as a competitor then linux, apple does the business the same way as microsoft does (no open source), and apple will not only be competing with microsoft but also linux. and the x86-64 platform is still virgin, no mature os is available yet, apple can use this oppertunity while longhorn is late and whipe out any chances of linux dominating that area and then microsoft can deal with apple with linux not being much of a threat.
Re: [News] Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips
Apple will still try have their unique hardware arreal. I'm sure they make plenty of money through hardware alone. Costs a fortune. New OS will have some sort of a protection to prevent it running on non apple hardware. So not really a direct competitor to MS in the software market. Cant see busineses running Apple gear as a database server. Home users is where Apple get sales (and artists)
Re: [News] Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips
Personally, I think it was a matter of survival for the Apple. Intel and AMD have switched to multi-core CPUs while IBM is moving to yet unproven cell processors (to be used in PS3). So it was either wait-and-see or do-it-now.
Dutch_Paki, there is no independent report of G5 being better than AMD and Intels’ processors. Infact G5 is rated slightly less than its equivalent processors.
