New York

Need help with places to eat. A few upscale Indian/Pakistani/Thai/Chinese restaurants around or in Manhattan area. No devon street type chichhora places please. I like good food, but ambience is important as well.

Thanks.

Kabab King: Jackson Heights

This afghani place, I keep forgetting the name of it, right next to Sabzi mandi ;-)

Buhara, Hawili : Coney Island, Brooklyn

mahnoor, all the restaurants in jackson heights are swamped with pervy waiters and to top it off.. poor service and yucky ambience. I said upscale madam, not some crummy place.

Know any place in manhattan?

a friend of mine who also just moved to NYC went to a place called waatan..or wataan something like that..in nyc..very cool she said you have your own little hut, take your shoes off and you pay 20 dollars and basically get to eat anything on the menu....

thanks amelie and mahnoor.
Have any more suggestions, would be helpful if you have been to the place yourself.

I have been to all the places mentioned above. And I was quite impressed by their services.

I know a lot of Gora resturants in manhattan but you're specifically asking for Desi. There's Shaheen! :)

honey, I have asked for Indian/pakistani/thai/chinese and forgot to add italian. Look again. If you know any thai, chinese or italian places in manhattan, help me out here.

And shaheen is in manhattan?

I would'nt expect "good" service or a nice "ambience" where you can buy lunch or dinner for two for under $50.

There's this Indian restaurant in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn that has a nice look to it and the menu's come in nice leather folders. I forget the name.

sameal, where in my whole post did I mention I wanted to pay only under 50 bucks? Did the voices in your head tell you that? I know better service and good atmosphere comes with a price, so suggest away.

well there are a few I frequent, Shaan on 48th and 6 ave, near rockefeller, they have live music on certain nights.. Tabla on Madison, Bukhara grill ( which is good if you want tandoori food, kababs, chicken, etc), Dawat on 58th, its owned by Madhur Jaffrey, which is good, but there are better..ada Maison De L'Inde thats on E 58th as well and there is Nirvana which overlooks Central Park, very classy...

As far as thai goes, I have only been to Tangerine in the village and Jaiya on 3rd ave btwn 28th and 29th..b/c i lived 2 streets away from there..both are very good.....

Okay please don't go to kabab king...thats ur less than average desi restaurant (the branch in jackson height's at least)

For something a little bit more upscale, I've managed to find only one actually decent restaurant in Jackson Heights...it's Pakistani and called Ambassador - has good sindhi style interior, very ethnic. Service is very good too.

I know sehar, going by the rep jackson heights restaurants have I would rather live on water the whole weekend than eat at one of those dumps.

50-b, thanks dude, those are some good names.

I have narrowed my list down to Tabla, Bao, Holy Basil and Highline. Thanks a lot everyone. :flower1:

hey nothing wrong with jackson hts.

one place i went to, it's a combination of indian and chinese. The food is all halal, if that matters to you. The place is called Chinese Mirch, it's on 28th street and Lexington avenue. You can take the 6 to 28th and walk up a block. I went a few days ago, and the food was great. It's a bit pricey for me (but i'm poor :() but the atmosphere is nice. Kinda tiny though, if u like that sort of thing. Service was good.

hope i helped :)

The resturants I mentioned are above all the other desi ones I have been taken to. I'm just trying to help sweetie!

He got them all the covered. Jaiya is one of my favorite restaurants. They have another branch in Hicksville, Long Island and I go there all the time.

If you are into south Indian there's Thali, somewhere in the 30's and Lex. (not sure of the exact place, Google it).

dont u just love this girl :hehe:

Desi Village?

If your willing to take the train over to Hoboken NJ there is a very nice place called India on the Hudson and another more casual but way classy place called cafe karma.

The down side to both.. they dont serve halal meat.. soyou stick to the reg. seafood or veg. stuff.. but India on the hudson has some killlllleeeeeeeeeer
Tandoori shrimp.
