New York panel votes down landmark status for ground zero mosque site

New York City’s Landmark Preservation Committee has voted against granting landmark designation to a building slated for demolition, paving the way for a controversial Islamic center and mosque to be built near the site of the former World Trade Center.

The building and an adjoining building are owned by real estate developer Soho Properties, which intends to build an Islamic center two blocks north of Ground Zero.

While the public vote had been the focus of much debate about the planned Islamic center and mosque, the commission could not have prevented the developers from building such a community center. By designating the building a landmark, however, the commission could have prevented Soho Properties from demolishing the structure or significantly altering its exterior.

Instead the nine-person commission voted unanimously against landmark status.

Cordoba opposed landmark status for the five-story building because it would like to build a taller, modern building. “It’s not minarets,” said Oz Sultan, spokesperson for the Cordoba Initiative, the organization behind the planned center that says it is “committed to promoting positive interaction between the Muslim world and the West.”

Sultan described a mock-up of the proposed center as consistent with the latest architecture found in New York City.

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and other city leaders support the Islamic center.

Opponents, including former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, have argued against a mosque being so close to the scene of the nation’s worst terrorist attack.

“Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing,” tweeted Palin last month on her Twitter account.

The Anti-Defamation League, an organization that battles anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry, is asking for the Islamic center and mosque to be built further away from Ground Zero in consideration of families who lost loved ones during the September 11, 2001, attacks. “Building an Islamic Center in the shadow of the World Trade Center will cause some victims more pain – unnecessarily – and that is not right,” said the organization in a statement.

Re: New York panel votes down landmark status for ground zero mosque site

I'm not sure why they have to build the mosque there? If so many people are against this, move it some where else. This is just stupid.

Re: New York panel votes down landmark status for ground zero mosque site

To make it clearer, denying landmark status to that site means that they have cleared the way for mosque to be built on that site.
Denying landmark status to site means approving the building of mosque.

^^ I know man and so I posted it in just a positive thought. =]

Re: New York panel votes down landmark status for ground zero mosque site

^ I posted clarification because I was confused two seemingly opposite headlines of the same news. One source said "denied landmark status" and the other said "cleared way for mosque". I didn't know what it was. :)

What kind of argument is that? so naive

Its a valid argument. What is point of building a mosque so close to where twin towers were once? And, why is it hard for people to understand that there are people who would be pi$$ed b/c of it?

To me, this is nothing more than unnecessary provocation which puts Islam and Muslims in negative light.

Re: New York panel votes down landmark status for ground zero mosque site

This is like building a Japanese Cultural Center near Pearl Harbor or an American Cultural Center near the epicenter on where America dropped the Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Re: New York panel votes down landmark status for ground zero mosque site

Put yourself in the shoes of the families of the deceased.. of the locals who felt UNDER ATTACK that day.. obviously they are not going to like this idea..

If I was in the mosque committee I would withdraw my request. There can be other ways to propagate religious harmony.

Agree, but despite that it has been approved for construction even when there is overwhelming opposition from locals, and understandably so.

Just imagine if tables were turns and this was church or temple being build next to some important Islamic site. The very same people who are arguing in favor of this mosque would be arguing against that.

More than 300 Muslims died in the Towers on 9/11,

So in both of your opinions they sacrificed their lives in vain?

Re: New York panel votes down landmark status for ground zero mosque site

They didn't sacrifice their lives. They were murdered.

There are plenty of mosques in NY. Why make one next to such a place where the jihadis struck?

And who killed them? Oh, let me guess, their co-religionists.

The point it not who died, the point is builders of this mosque are trying to provoke locals who are understandably pi$$ed at the idea of building mosque so close to ground zero.

Re: New York panel votes down landmark status for ground zero mosque site

shami.. I am not convinced that the builders of the mosque are doing this intentionally to offend anyone... but seeing that it is.. they should just back off.. and build it elsewhere and promote religious harmony that way.

you need to explore 9/11 happening again. ;) were they jihadi or was it something else. People know it now yet they call it jihadi :D

Re: New York panel votes down landmark status for ground zero mosque site

Regardless of who the attackers were, the media has painted Islam in such a negative light that most people in the West thing "Islam, Mosque = terrorists". Taking that into account, building a mosque there is just going to anger a lot of people.

Japanese government attacked Pearl Harbor. But Islam as a religion did not attack WTC. It was a bunch of morons.
Accusing all people for the actions of few makes one no different from very people one hates.
