Anyone here bought anything on deal during the holidays? Would you care to review your purchase and tell us about it? I had just bought a amazon fire stick. The only thing better with it is that it uses an actual remote instead of the mobile phone as a remote (chromecast)
Re: New technology purchases
The most recent tech stuff that I've bought is my XBox One. As a piece of tech I'm disappointed with it in terms of how it compared to its predecessor....particularly its load times and mandatory installs. Not to mention its hdd, which I feel is way too small. I'll rant about it more in gaming.
Re: New technology purchases
I purchased Nokia Lumia 735. I got it on discount price from Amazon. As a piece of hardware, it's top notch. The phone has the Nokia build quality which I like very much. The curved edges give it a bit slippery feel (may be because I have iPhone 5 which does not have the curved edges). The case is plastic of good quality and is changeable. I may need to buy a case just for the grip.
The Windows Phone 8.1 OS is fast and fluid but still it lacks the consistency of iOS. The display is OLED 720p and I really like it for reading text. App selection is bit limited but most popular ones are available, although the experience of same app (e.g. Twitter) varies a lot (from iOS to Windows Phone OS) so you will need some time to adjust to the new platform.
Battery life is also great, I was able to use it for 2 days with around 30% battery still left. The battery is removable, which is a plus. The phone has 8GB storage (approx. 3.5 GB available) but also has microSD card slot. I've ordered 32GB card so storage should not be an issue.
735 has 4G LTE and here in France I used it with Free Network and it worked great. The connectivity is strong and I even got WiFi connectivity where my iPhone 5 would struggle for the signals. The call quality and data reception, 735 is as good as any high-end expensive phone.
735 also has front-facing 5mp selfie camera along with 6.7mp back camera. Both cameras perform good enough in decent lighting conditions.
The 735 is identical to Nokia Lumia 830 hardware wise except that 830 has pureview camera + dedicated camera key and a metal frame which is similar to iPhone 5. Overall I will give 735 a score of 7/10. If given a choice, I would opt for Nokia Lumia 830 simply because its metal frame gives a better grip.

I want a xbox one but after reading this I am not buying it anymore. Please post the review in both places so we could keep a running commentary here.
Re: New technology purchases
Was gifted Nexus 6. it does not have anything unique, but everything is upgraded. Processor, screen size, os - which makes it bigger, better and faster.

Well the good part is that it can still be optimized/improved. From what I have read, it has been already. I'd say it's not so much of a deal breaker as much as a disappointment. I'll discuss it in more detail shortly. In a nutshell, I feel somewhat let down as a console gamer. Though PCs and consoles are conceptually the same thing, consoles used to have more of a plug and play aspect to them, where you could just put in the game and start it up. I can't say if that's the same story with the PS4, but my guess is that due to the Bluray drive read limitations (i.e. speed) and the size of the games (20+ GB), they need to install them to the HDD. The good part is that you don't need to wait for the (complete) install to start playing the game.
Re: New technology purchases
bought an ipad mini with 4g, though I haven't started (or perhaps never will?) the 4g service. It is good for a stand alone GPS unit along with surfing on wifi. Tons of storage too.
Re: New technology purchases
Fire stick, Jadoo 3 , Ruku HD, NetgearNeo

I usually tether wifi from my phone to my tablet.

Whats your take on jadoo 3 and Ruku?
Re: New technology purchases
I have been using both for long time just upgraded for new features and speed. Both have their own pros and cons. Since Jadoo is run by desi owners they do not believe in investment in infrastructure that is why even if you connect it with LAN instead of wireless you will see buffering. Ruku on the other hand suffers from buffering once in a while that too because I use it via wi-fi.

I am not sure if jadoo is legal. Do you know? By legal I mean they are not buying the tv streams from anyone. Is that true?

Re: New technology purchases
@Mirch, did you try WatchESPN app on Fire Stick? I tried it for the first time last night, they had SL-NZ test match live on it. I don't have cable, so I shouldn't be getting it in the first place. Does it work for you too?
Re: New technology purchases
How are they making money? Do they have monthly subscription plans?
Re: New technology purchases
I did not, but will try and let you know.
They sell their box and many versions of it then they have adds before they stream a channel.

I hope I can use the fire stick TV to watch the world cup matches.
