New job blues

I will be joining my new job in a media company as Senior Team Lead in IT Department. type of work doesnt change only the industry sector, I have been working in Telecoms sector since 6 years. as Telecoms and media are converging so I thought this would be good move.

I have been mostly focused on technical side of the business but this will be mix of Interacting with business more and technical basically running IT department smoothly and looking after new developments.

its just I think job change after working for about 6 years for a BIG4 IT consultancy and jumping right in to a big media organisation, possible change of enviroment and being new making me bit nervous i think.

First if anyone of you done this kind of change before ? if yes how did it go?
I am not new the client interaction and in past I have done it while working as design and Analysis for various clients. any tips for to make good impact, which I have made some already by getting this job after various interviews and screening. so fire up some tips and experiences.

Re: New job blues

Hey Shak,

Congratulations on the lateral upward move! Good decision at the right time I must say from a telco a.k.a. “communication service provider” to a potential “communication & entertainment service provider”.

Based on your account posted above, I think you’ll do just great cuz it seems like you already have the subject matter expertise for the job that you’ve been recruited for. The key is to brand yourself as such in your new role – i.e. as an SME, while at the same time venerating others who may be the business process owners for their own respective units.

It looks like the focus of your role is going to shift a little from technology initiatives to technology operations, and as an operations manager with a technology focus, you may have to interact a little more with other business functions. Again, the key will be to make others recognize you as part of an Operations team which is core to the business, and not as part of the Technical team which is often perceived as peripheral to the business.

In any case, if you have a copy of the job description for your new job, please do post it here… and also tell us about a typical day in your old job. I’m sure others can provide a more informed response after reading it.

Best of Luck again ! :k:
