New Jersey-Paterson

I couldn’t locate the forum for NJ so I am posting here.. We will be in Paterson NJ for the weekend.. I want to know how far is this place from desi restaurants in NJ? Any recommendations for desi food in NJ? We would like to make a short trip in Manhattan to visit a friend but how is the traffic between Manhattan and Paterson on the weekend?

Any indoor attractions in NJ since I am assuming the outdoors must be closed in this season.. in a nut shell we have two days in NJ, what can we do?

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

GTG - Paterson is primary the arab area of NJ. Go down to main street for great Arabic food and sweets from either Al-Basha or Al-Kumba.

Getting to NYC:
You are about a 40 minutes train ride OR 30 minute car ride from NYC (manhatan). The traffic on the weekends is fine. Aovid rush hours on the weekdays. If you are driving follow signs for Route 3 / Lincoln Tunnel. Trains run to Newark Penn Station and straight
to Manhattan

Getting to the closest Desi Area:
From Paterson the closest desi area is Jersey City. (Newark Ave) - It's on you way to NYC if you drive. Take Route 3 straight exit for Tonnelle Ave

Indoor Activities:
Lots of Indoor exbihits in East Rutherford area for the Christmas season (10 min from paterson). They have a huge indoor sporting facility (near Giants stadium).

There are tons of nice mueseums (I suggest the MET) in NYC. I would suggest to bundle up and enjoy the christmas decor of the city.

Enjoy your time in NJ

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

Thank you so much.. looks like it won't be that bad! I live with Arab community so please no more arab food for me.. I want to eat desi food. How is that Shahnawaz weekend buffet?

ok I have a silly question.. are hotels cheaper in Paterson or closer to desi places?

In fact I will be in Newark for a day too and would like a nice desi dinner.. any recommendations please?

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

Shahnawaz weekend buffet (near Edison) (BIG thumbs up) if you are craving desi food. They have about 40 dishes inlcuding halwa puri, nihari, fish and they do some special dish like "lamb" or "mutton joints" for the weekend. It includes all drinks, naan and dessert.

You can also try Shezan, Moghul, Ming, Naan King, Khan Kabab, Kabab Paradise (Afghani)

Hotels are the same in Paterson and desi places (anywhere except closer to the NYC). So you can get a good deal near Edison or Iselin (another desi place) and take the train into Manhattan from metropark.

I don't know of any desi resturants in Newark. YOu can go 15 minutes to Newark Ave which is actually Jersey city and there are tons of them on the street.

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

great.. thank you.. I am looking forward to shahnawaz buffet and will try Kabab Paradise too (I read your review in the other thread).. I may have never seen taht much desi food in the US yet :D

we will be driving around because otherwise I will open another tutorial thread on trains in NY/NJ.. since the commute to Manhattan doesn't seem time consuming either so it should be fine.

Thanks njgal.. you live up to your nick :-)

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

If you want desi and desi food - you are coming to the right place. Don't forget the keema walay naan from Khan Kabab (near Kabab Paradise).

I can't really take the credit GTG. If my hubby was not the obsessed with good desi food, I wouldn't really know anything :D

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

hehee if it wasn't for my husband, probably I will not be looking for desi food restaurants :D

ok so food is all taken care of but we have one full day in NJ that needs to be planned out.. I wonder what can we do.. I wish six flags was still open.. sigh!!!

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

Go to NY ...

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

We have been to NY before and it wasn't fun at all..

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

Achcha look at this site, if you have not already

Things to do in New Jersey - FUN NEW JERSEY - Fun things to do in NJ

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

Thanks but yes I did look into it.. most of it is for summer.. the only thing I could find interesting were zoos so probably thats where we will end but I wish there was some indoor fun since it's sooo cold outside :$

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

ok so zooo it is.. please tell me about the best zoo in NJ.. there are so many and I dun want to randomly pick one!!!

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

Thanks guys,,, you are only two weeks late in telling me all this.... All I had in NJ for four days was good Shahnawaz Buffet,, :).... Excellent food and service... staff is pretty friendly.. and remember, give the tip as cash to the waiters, not through your credit card. I got his info from the waiters that management does not pay the tip to the staff, which is rude..

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

GTG - do you have kids with you. Or do you and your hubby enjoy animals.

If you want a big zoo - go to bronx zoo. They have the entire zoo lit up for christmas and it's pretty.

If you want a smaller one - the only one I have been to is the turtle back zoo. It's small but very nice for smaller kids.

Your other options are Atlantic City.

"The Polar Express," the Whippany Railway Museum you can ride an old-fashioned train decked out for the holidays on a 10-mile trip down a historic railway.

You can go snow tubing on NJ/PA border. There are nice outlets by it

If you just want to hnag around - there is Jersey Gardens outlet mall. IT's huge. They also play desi movies in the cinemas - (stadium seating)

If you like the upity mall - there is shorthills mall. Very nice and very exclusive.

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

njgal.. I was waiting for your reply :$

My husband loves animals and loves exploring places especially zoo.. I usually tag along for pictures..I will check out bronx zoo, railway museum, and Jersey Garden outlet.. I guess we have enough to plan for a full day.. thank you sooooooo much!

I checked snow tubing n skiing y'day but it doesn't even open up until Dec. 24th and we live in mountains anyway so it would be kind of a shame to go out of state for skiing when it's offered right in our backyard :D

CB.. thanks for letting me know.. we will do cash tips :-)

Re: New Jersey-Paterson

what a weekend.. we went to the Bronx zoo, freezing cold and no one in the zoo except the two of us.. fun indeed! Later we also shopped at the Jersey Gardens Mall, everything was cheaper than the malls here and factory outlets were just awesome! total treat!

Despite teh snow storm warning, we managed to ate at Kabab Paradise (Afghani Place) and Shahnawaz buffet brunch.. their halwa pori cholay were the yummiest both of us ever had in our paindo state! Highly recommended!

Thank you so much njgal :flower1:
