New Intifada Declared

Lebanese opposition declares intifada
Anti-Syrian opposition members have called for an uprising

The Lebanese opposition has declared an “uprising or independence” and called for the pro-Syrian government to step down.

In response to the criminal and terrorist policy of the Lebanese and Syrian authorities, the Lebanese opposition declares the democratic and peaceful intifada [uprising] for independence," said leading opposition figure Samir Frangia.

“We demand the departure of the illegitimate regime,”

said, reading a final statement at the home of Druze leader Walid Jumblatt after an opposition meeting in a Beirut hotel on Friday. Jumblatt did not attend the meeting, four days after the assassination of former premier Rafiq al-Hariri, for “security reasons,” aides said.

The meeting was attended by more than 40 of the parliament’s 128 members, as well as dozens of political activists. The opposition called for “the formation of an interim government as a supreme national necessity to protect the Lebanese people and ensure the immediate and complete pullout of Syrian forces from Lebanon ahead of free and honest legislative elections.”

They also declared “the suspension of any political or legal debate in parliament before the truth is uncovered.”

"We call on parliament … to hold a plenary sesssion to dicuss the series of assassinations which started with the attempt on

Marwan Hamadeh, with the martyrdom of Rafiq al-Hariri and the targeting of former minister (Basil) Fleyhan" in the same blast that killed alHariri.

Hamadeh, an MP and deputy to Jumblatt, was unsuccessfully
targeted in October. Jumblatt himself received a veiled death threat earlier this month from the Lebanese branch of Syria’s ruling Baath party
Lebanon’s anti-Syria opposition has accused the government and Damascus of having a hand in the massive bomb blast that killed former prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri and 16 other people in Beirut on Monday.

The assassination sent shockwaves through the nation.
Aljazeera’s correspondent in Beirut said the meeting of the opposition groups was the fourth of its kind. Sources close to the talks said the meetings are an attempt to hammer out a plan to escalate the toppling of the Lebanese government.
Both the Lebanese and Syrian governments deny any involvement in the 14 February assassination

yep this 'intifada' is as 'homegrown' as they come..

Re: New Intifada Declared

Remember Hama. That ought to shut the ^^pic boys above. Syria will level them down as they did in hama and killed their own upto 20,000 no problem.

Re: New Intifada Declared

Actually, this should be interesting. It will reveal just how much Lebanon's population views the presence of Syrian peacekeepers in a negative light. Is there genuine dissent, or just opposition with strong PR with western news agencies?

Only the next 4 weeks will tell....

Re: New Intifada Declared

Its all about the Saudi and Syrian gains in Lebanon, its just war of economics, after the Tiaf agreement Hariri was given a free hand to develop Lebanon with Saudi financiers, now they (Syrians) want a bigger cut, thats all. At the end of the day both he Saudi and the Syrians know that they have to make sure all the parties stick to Taif agreement, and I am sure they will sort it out. The Lebanese President, after being extended by the parliament for three years is totally in Syrian pocket, and the guy who is calling for Intifada is a lame politician, I would have given the call more credibility if it was made by NabiH Baree (Amel ) being the most neutral in parliament, Walid Janblat and Ameen Lahud are just two extremes.
P.S, have guys seen how many Saudi flags were there on his Funeral.

Re: New Intifada Declared

mad, why do you call them peacekeepers? I thought they were occupiers?

Lebanese Hold Historic Anti-Syrian March

Mon Feb 21, 4:43 PM ET Top Stories - AP

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Tens of thousands marched Monday in the biggest anti-Syrian protest in Lebanese history amid signals that Syria will soon withdraw its troops from parts of the country. President Bush (news - web sites) renewed demands for Syrian forces to leave Lebanon immediately.

The protest marked one week since the Feb. 14 death of Rafik Hariri and began at the bomb-scarred site of the former prime minister’s assassination, which turned many Lebanese against Syria and increased international pressure on Damascus to extract its army from Lebanon.

Holding aloft red roses and Lebanese flags, the throngs on the streets shouted insults at Syria and demanded the resignation of the pro-Syrian government in a march that began at the seaside site where Hariri and 16 others were killed and ended at his grave in the city center.

The protesters wore scarves of red and white — the colors of Lebanon’s flag — which have become the symbol of the opposition’s “independence uprising,” described as a peaceful campaign to dislodge the government and force the Syrian army out of Lebanon.

Hariri’s assassination has brought Lebanese together and strengthened the opposition, but it was unclear if the momentum would force a change in government or push the Syrian army out of the country.

Another former prime minister Gen. Michel Aoun, said Monday he would return from exile before this year’s parliamentary elections and that he may launch his own candidacy if the opposition needs his support. The former commander of the Lebanese army fled the country in 1990.

“I will return before the legislative elections, probably by mid-April,” Aoun told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from Paris. “And if the situation is critical for the opposition in a region, then I will throw in my personal weight and run in the elections.”

As the demonstration was under way in Beirut, Bush issued a strong warning to Syria from Brussels, saying Damascus “must end its occupation of Lebanon.”

In Damascus, Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa said Syrian President Bashar Assad affirmed during a meeting that his country will “soon” take steps to withdraw its army from Lebanese areas in line with a 1989 agreement. It was not clear whether that meant Syria would completely leave Lebanon.

Syria, which sent its army into Lebanon in 1976 amid the bloody civil war, has always pledged to implement the 1989 accord that ended the conflict, and has redeployed troops several times since 2000. However, a withdrawal to the eastern Bekaa Valley near the border that was scheduled for the early 1990s, followed by an eventual total pullout, has never been carried out.

Syrian troops here once numbered 35,000; the current number is 15,000, and Syria remains the chief power broker in Lebanon. Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa said recently he expects Syrian troops to stay for two more years.

Demonstrators in Beirut beat drums and held up portraits of leaders assassinated during the 1975-90 civil war as they sang patriotic songs. Shouts of “Syria out!” and “Syria is the criminal,” competed with loud insults directed against the Syrian president — words that until few months ago few dared to say in public.

Marching past policemen and army troops in full battle gear, some carried banners reading, “Independence,” and chanted, “The government of puppets must fall” and “Enough blood, leave us alone.” Playing on words, one placard read in English: “Syrial killers.”

In a show of Muslim-Christian national unity, some protesters held a copy of the Quran in one hand and a cross in another.

“Enough bloodshed and disasters. It is the 21st century, and people should be able to govern themselves,” said Youssef Mukhtar, a 47-year-old Lebanese-American engineer. “The situation has become unbearable and we have to regain our country.”

Salma Raya, a 25-year-old student waving a Lebanese flag, said: “We want the Syrians out. We want our independence. What are we waiting for?”

Many in Lebanon blame Syria for a string of political assassinations during and after the civil war, including those of the Druse leader Kamal Jumblatt and Lebanese President-elect Bashir Gemayel.

On Monday, pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud said “Israel was the first to benefit” from the assassination of Hariri, a Lahoud rival best known as the man who negotiated the 1989 accord and rebuilt Lebanon while serving as prime minister during 10 of the 14 years after the conflict.

European Union (news - web sites) foreign ministers on Monday demanded an international investigation into the assassination, joining France, the United States, the Lebanese opposition and the Hariri family. The Lebanese government has said it will cooperate with a team to be sent by the United Nations (news - web sites) but will not allow an international inquiry.

The killing of Hariri, a Sunni Muslim, shook Lebanon and sparked an outpouring of sympathy that cut across the sectarian divide. His funeral Wednesday turned into mass demonstration against Syria’s control of Lebanon.

Monday’s crowd was estimated in the tens of thousands — the largest anti-Syrian demonstration ever in Lebanon. A Nov. 30 demonstration called for by the pro-Syrian government to counter the opposition drew some 100,000 people.

Prime Minister Omar Karami’s government last week extended a hand to the opposition, calling for dialogue.

The protesters observed a moment of silence at 12:55 p.m., the exact time that Hariri’s motorcade was blown up.

Re: New Intifada Declared

I agree, its very hard to comprehend for many in the west that how come a country so deeply dictatorial in nature supports an emerging democracy, and that’s also in the Middle East. It seems like plain bigotry, you don’t have democracy at home but you are helping democracy in another country. Its a fact that Lebanon after a long civil war had the chance to go through three peaceful democratically elected governments, with out blood shed, and the liberation of the Southern Lebanon from Israel all under the nose of 14,000 Syrian troops. The three main factions in Lebanon, the old civil war players, the Sunni, the Shiia and the Christians are all in the democratically elected government now. I think it’s better if they decide through elections if they want Syrian peacekeeping forces there or not.

The western governments are just poking their nose in a matter, which has already been agreed upon since 1989. I think if the Syrians are really considering to pull out the troops, then watch out for a high level delegation visiting Riyadh.

Re: New Intifada Declared

Whats a few hundred thousand. Millions marched against the iraq war but did that stop blair/bush?

Leb gov. still havent changed thier stance, cuz so far the majority of lebanese are pro-syrian and hence the gov has the majority support. Why d'u not see hezbullah attacking syrian forces like they did Israel? Do you think they'd sit quietly if they wanted them out?

anywayz, we fret like mad over the 'occupation' of lebanon, but could give a crap about palestine? hmmmm so how does that one work out?

Re: New Intifada Declared

Because hezbullah only kills infidels and a strong military presence on the Israeli border makes killing Jews and destroying Israel a more plausible goal.

Syria needs to pull out of Lebanon because they are a terrorist state and the days of the terrorist state are numbered.

Re: New Intifada Declared

come off it. whats syria compared to Israel?

and what if syria leaves and Israel occupies lebanon again. are you gonna switch sides?

Re: New Intifada Declared

If there are no cross border attacks (just as with Palestinian homicide bombers), then Israel has no business in Lebanon.

Re: New Intifada Declared

ah but Israel regularly violates Lebanese air space and sends military vehiches into leb. territory. Isnt that being provocative and sending the wrong message? No wonder then the lebanese wants syrians to stay.

Re: New Intifada Declared

Provacative is a terrorist, hezbullah-supporting Syrian army occupying Israel's neighbor from where constant attacks against Israel originate. A country that lives in peace with her neighbors would not warrant cross border incursions by Israeli military.

Re: New Intifada Declared

I am trying to figure out what's the US interest in all this? Pressuring Syria from Labanon?

Re: New Intifada Declared

^ Not much. They have a whinging friend who wants a piece of lebanon.

Seminole; what about Israels other neighbour. Does luv thy neighbour only work on one side of the border?

oh i forgot they're not christians.
