New HD problem

I had an upgrade to my dextop a few weeks ago.
I have a 3800+ @ 4400+ speeds :halo:
512 MB Ram. (am buying InshaAllah 2 Gig in a week or two  )
AM2 asus motherboard
and a Samsung Sata HD 160 GB

Now I am using a 160 GB Maxtor HD for storage and the Samsung as master for Windows XP
But for some odd reason the system keeps crashing every few hours. I tried underclocking and ran several tests for memory and such. I didnt find anything.

But for the past 2 weeks the samsung HD is making a weird noise aswell. After a certain period of extensive usage the HD makes a click sound with an interval of aproximate 4-5 seconds. After this the HD crashes and the system resets itself. Really annoying when you a working on a project :o

So any ideas what could cause this? Should I return the HD? I think the HD is dead or atleast dying.

I m removing the HD right at this moment and I wil probably return it . But I want to be sure it is the HD

muchos cracias for the help guys

Re: New HD problem

so its been 10 mins now and still no reply ?

I think this is an outrage sir!

Re: New HD problem

Take this HDD off line ... reboot the system & see if it stays up ... (unless ur OS is running is of this HDD).

Re: New HD problem

The OS is running from this HD. I tried to boot with and without the maxtor as slave and the problem persists. So I guess it must be the new Samsung HD.

I have a 40 Gig IDE HD and I ll install windows on that one probably.

Re: New HD problem

I think there is some problem with your 160 gb HD....

get the back up of the data from that and then try to run some disk repair softwares I think I am having that too.. or scan for bad sectors............

it can be the classic problem that is the melting down of head or heating up of head.

Re: New HD problem

clicking = bad
In the olden days I'd suggest doing some at-home techniques like taking the drive out nocking on the floor/desk for a few mnts. But other than that call up the manufacturer and have it replaced, the HD warranties are great. When I moved to my current job i found like 5-6 old 120 gb old drives which weren't working and all of them got replaced. :)
Hopefully u didn't have much data on it. If you did try booting from ur 40 gig drive and use this as slave and move stuff a little bit at a time.

Re: New HD problem

Any noise coming out of a HDD is a bad omen. I have actually seen such a problem before and found the problem with the HDD power cable. Use a voltmeter and see if the SATA power is providing stable 3.3V, 5V and 12V voltages to the HDD. Try putting the SATA HDD in a different slot. SATA HDD connectors are not shielded and can be affected be strong source of interference (i.e., cell phones, CDMA base units, etc). Also check the compatibility of your SATA brand with that of your mobo.
