New Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan

A non-local person (Chaudhry Barjees Tahir) who also happen to be the FEDERAL MINISTER has been appointed as Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan which is a non-political post. Seems like NS is handing out posts to keep the leaders happy instead of deciding on the interests of the GB.

Another example of “good governance”

Ex-officio basis: Barjees Tahir appointed Gilgit-Baltistan governor – The Express Tribune

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir Affairs Chaudhry Barjees Tahir was appointed GB Governor on Sunday.

It’s not the first time that a non-local or a federal minister has been made governor of G-B. Earlier Qamer Zaman Kaira was appointed the first governor of G-B in 2009 after the post was created under the G-B Governance and Self-Rule Order. At the time, Kaira was also federal minister for G-B and Kashmir Affairs.

“On a summary initiated by the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, the president has approved on the prime minister’s advice to appoint Ch Muhammad Barjees Tahir, Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan as Governor Gilgit-Baltistan, on ex-officio basis and signed the Commission of Appointment in his favour,” said a notification issued by the Presidency.

Sources said the prime minister opted for a non-local governor in G-B in an attempt to rescue the PML-N from disintegration as most senior leaders of the party were vying for the ceremonial but lucrative office. “The party cannot afford any disturbance within its ranks at this crucial time when the G-B assembly elections are due in May,” said the source.

Another source said the decision was taken upon the recommendation of an influential leader of PML-N in G-B, who wants to be elevated as governor in case he loses the assembly elections, where he has set eyes on the slot of the chief minister. “It will be difficult to remove a local governor and therefore Barjees Tahir has been given the office temporarily,” the source said.

Re: New Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan

So let me get this straight Decent, you want only Punjabis to Govern in Punjab. Only Hazara or Pashtun in KPK etc.? Seriously.

So by that same standard you think a guy from Arizona should never be the Governor of New York?

^Was not expecting such a weak argument from you

Re: New Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan

Oh right…that is weak, but stating you must have a local be the Governor is a great argument. I bet you agreed with the current Governor when he stated that Gilgit had the choice to join Russia and China if it wanted too

Its okay. Its not like you foreigners set the same standards sitting in the US to Pakistan.

  1. In USA, people elect the government. In Pakistan, governor is appointed. So drawing a parallel between two was nonsensical.
  2. Emphasis of OP was not just on a non local person, but also the fact the the appointee is already a federal minister. You totally missed that point in your haste of starting a you vs us argument.
  3. Somehow we both live in USA, but I am a foreigner while you're a hard core Pakistani! How?

Re: New Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan

  • So what? The point was made that a non-local shouldn't be posted there. Its retarded if its one nation.

  • Is such an appointment against Pakistani law? I actually don't know, but I am assuming that is not the problem. The problem is the former governor is a PPP politician who was appointed by Zardari. The people protesting are PPP supporters and specifically party works. See a bit of context and everything makes sense.

  • How? Diplomatic visa snookums :) You can't get that being an American, unless all Americans need visas to live in the US.

  • Re: New Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan

As for Arizona governor, TLK has already answered that. You are comparing apples and oranges.

    and now on topic:

There is a way to do thing,
there is a BETTER way to do thing
and then there is a WORSTS way to do things.

Seems like NS only believe in WORST WAY.

Its always desirable to have local person as Governor since he represents PRESIDENT and not federal govt. And in current environment its hard to find non-political person (even though thats desirable too) but appointing a current federal minister to the post is just taking the $hit to another level.

    Re: New Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan

Elections have nothing to do with the notion that you must have a local as governor. That is the beauty of all of this. You two sit pretty living in the West and promote ethno-centric politics in Pakistan. Well done on working on unity in Pakistan. You must be so proud of yourselves.

I am sorry what? The Governor represents the President? Can you show me where this is in the law? I honestly want to know as I have never heard of that before.

    Re: New Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan

    Governor role:
Governor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Are you crazy? what does “Selecting/electing local representative” has to do with ethno-centric politics? On one side you cant beat enough drum of “Oh you live outside Pakistan you have nothing to do with Pakistan you are not loyal to Pakistan” and on the other side you think that if someone is advocating for local candidates they are being ethno-centic. How will new governor be “loyal” to GB awam? (as per your own logic. I think otherwise)

PS: I dont know where you live yourself but seems like idea of living outside Pakistan but still care for Pakistan is too much for you to comprehend. So I wont waste my time addressing that again.

    Re: New Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan

Firstly your link does not defend your assertion that the Governor represents the President. The clauses from the constitution do not indicate that in anyway.

Secondly the wikipedia link as no source. I honestly have never heard of the fact that the President needs a representative in each province of his own country. I mean that is saying the French PM needs a representative in each province. Its retarded.

The point is simple. Being local has no bearing in a legal position for a government post. Everybody is a national of the state and thus has the same rights and privileges. Thus I am assuming you believe only Pashtoons should have jobs in KPK and none in Sindh because they can’t be loyal?

Also you agree with me then, that since those who are not Pakistani nationals can’t be loyal to Pakistan?
