A friend is going to be in Pakistan for 3-4 months. He is carrying an unlocked GSM phone. How much should he expect to pay to get a new local GSM SIM card valid for 3-4 months. And what are approximate charges per minute with such an arrangement?

I think the activation is around RS. 500 and then you pay for the prepaid minutes. When I was there early this year for 3 months, I spent about RS. 4000 on those prepaid cards because there is this huge habbit of people to give you a "miss call" and want you to call them back.

Pirawa, sims are free from Mobilink. Im here on vacation & 2 new companies have sprouted - Telenor & Al Warid(founded by Abu Dhabi late president's son). Calls are as cheap Rs 2.5 a min if its the same GSM company & international sms costs Rs 5. Taxes are applicable when adding prepaid cards
I'd suggest Telenor, bt Al Warid is better but they currently dont have any connections. Mobilink reception is fair, & Paktel even charges u for checking balance.
