New Gaming RIG

I am clueless when it comes to hardware so please give your suggestions..

I am going for SLI … was looking at this: NCIX.com - Canada’s Premier Computer Store - Great Technology, Service and Selection. how is that bundle #2?

also, is the i7 a good decision or should I go with quad core? even then, having quad core has advantage over core2duo?

and the PSU I am looking at this: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p…R&promoid=1145

The HDD, I hear WD is better than Seagate, should I got with 1tb or just cut it in hafl ~600gb?

Re: New Gaming RIG

Yo!

That PSU is awesome. It will serve all your power needs. The bundle looks nice too.

i7 is supposed to be very very good. Here’s a review on it. CLICK HERE

Re: New Gaming RIG

I think I will take a step back... it's just adding up like crazy! I will stick with a quad core, no need for i7 just yet.

Maybe an ASUS Rampage mobo ? and for now will stick with 1 card instead of SLI... as prices will drop beginning February I hear..

Re: New Gaming RIG

That motherboard looks nice. I didn't read much into the details, does it have an nvidia chipset? Nvidia is supposed to be good.

Also, one card for now would probably be wise, but remember when you do SLI, the cards have to be identical as far as i know. They clock speeds should match, and all that.

Having said that, and since you're just going with one card for now, i would probably get a SLI Motherboard anyways that way all you have to do is just add another graphics card at your convenience.

Quad Core is an awesome CPU, it should satisfy your performance and gaming needs equally. Which one are you thinking of getting?

Re: New Gaming RIG

Yes you're right it makes sense to get a SLI ready mobo. I think I will go with the x58.. heck I'll just get the bundle and SLI it if it comes down a bit..hehe

as for the CPU, the Q6600 or Q8200? Also the x58 mobo is ready for i7 too so when the time comes I don't have to switch out the mobo for that also. But I guess when that time comes.... I will build a brand new one with new mobo lol..

Since I will be getting the new mobo, will be looking at DDR3 memory, OCZ or some other brand? How's Patriot?

and for the cooling, do I really need extra cooling or will it run fine in normal room temperature? and how does the water cooling system work?

Re: New Gaming RIG

lol i know right. sigh It’s like you’re in a candy shop, and you want it all. lol

Personally, i like Q6600 better.

OCZ is a good name. I’ve heard a lot of good things about them, but Asus motherboards are picky. So make sure you know exactly which ram is compatible with Asus. When i first got this MB i had to swap our ram twice because originally i bought OCZ SLI ram too, but it didn’t work. So, i had to end up getting Kingston HyperX.

I don’t know anything about Patriot, so couldn’t say. :\

Here’s how water cooling works. It has detailed pictures as well, check it out:

Re: New Gaming RIG

lol sooo true, i want it alll!!!

Q6600 it is! but will not be ordering before January anyways, maybe ill just put it off until February? I hear new stuff comes out then, is it true?

thanks for the guide

Re: New Gaming RIG

so i just realized that the x58 motherboards will not support the Q6600... bummer... so it's either i get the x58 with the i7, or just get a x48 with q6600.... but then again i can wait till march or end of semester (may) and get the i7 bundle - prices should drop by then..

Re: New Gaming RIG

yea x58 is i7 specific.

Either you go Quadcore, or you wait altogether and get the entire thing later at the time of your choice.

PS: If you consider going i7, you may need to get better ram as well. I saw one earlier today from Corsair, it's i7 specific ram. 1600 clockspeed, 6gig combined with 3 stick of 2gig each.

Just some things to keep in mind. :D

Like i said, Candy Shop. :p
