New England Region

I don’t see much talk about the travel plans and places in New England region. It’s gorgeous here and there is soo much to explore in all four seasons!

Anyone interested in sharing ideas, pics, places that are MUST visit etc?

FYI: New England includes states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.

Re: New England Region

Must visit Newport, RI in the summer season. Amazing little weekend trip. You can just walk around town, take a water taxi to another mini island like Goat Island, Block Island. Each Island has its own charm and really yummy seafood restaurants. In downtown Newport you have the Cliff Walk is a few mile walk around the famous mansions and the left is overlooking beachside. Also you can rent out scooters/bikes to ride around town which is lots of fun. You can also go Kayaking, sailing...all sorts of water activities. I think when I went few years ago, we took a 2 hour "cruise" in a sailboat....it was AWESOME!!! It was $29 i think in a Schooner, really nice to enjoy the wind on a warm summer day.

Re: New England Region

oh great thank you so much. It’s in my list now

I have had the opportunity to go skiing in ME, MA, and VT and I loved the mountains in Killington VT. Must visit if anyone enjoys that!

We were at the Ogunquit beach in ME this weekend and that place was super gorgeous.. The marginal walkway by the sea was breathtakingly beautiful. Here are a few pics:

I will write more about places in MA that are must visit.

Anyone else got something to share?

Re: New England Region

For MA, If you have kids with you then New England Aquarium in Boston is a must go... Cape Cod is beautiful in Summer.. you need a full day for a trip to Martha's Vineyard! Katie's home made Icecream in Hyannis is to die for!

One of my personal favorites is a whale watching trip in Plymouth,MA. It's about 5 hours on the boat and if you don;t get sea sick then it's wonderful!

Western Mass is beautiful for a scenic drive and of course six flags in Agawam deserves a visit too!

Outside of MA, we have Mount Washington(NH) in our list for this summer. I have heard great reviews about it.

Re: New England Region

GTG pics are awesome. I went to Portland a year or o back and that was a nice quiet, relaxing trip, again GREAT food, especially seafood...especially CRAB!!!! :)

Another place I reccoment is Bar Harbor, Maine....amazing for a scenic, relaxing getaway. We actually stayed in Bangor, but try to stay in Bar Harbor itself. Visit Acadia National Park/Mountain....views are breathtaking when you drive all the way up the mountain. Also there is a lovely beach at the bottom with very different temperature oddly enough. Again small harbor town, really rustic feel to the town...full of history. Again several options for Kayak outfitters offering tours from the beginner to Expert level. I went with a ton of cousins so we really had a ball, about 12 of us went to go Kayaking, definitely the more the merrier :) Did I mention the seafood. OMG they had so many random Seafood Bakes with like crab/lobster/shrimp etc roasting on pitfires.....amazingly good food. Bar Harbor is soo much more scenic than Portland, maine.

Re: New England Region

oh I would love to go to Bar Harbor BUT that is like 8 hours drive for us so we need a long weekend for it. I can't wait to go parasailing.. thats a MUST for me this summer!

Re: New England Region

Great Thread. We are going to head up north this summer so I am loving the ideas in this thread.

We went to Gloucester and Cape Ann seceral years ago. Went whale watching. I got sea sick but once we were there it was magnificent.

Gloucester is amazing. It’s small. You can rent bikes. I loved the water line. It’s not sandy but rocky. Beautiful Blue water.

Oh please do let us know how the parasailing goes, and where you do it. Are you able to swim? I can't swim but my babhi told me that there are places in Cape May where you can do water activities without knowing how to swim...im so scared but would also want to try.

Exactly where is Gloucester & Cape Ann? The pic looks great. It reminds me, for anyone visiting Boston, MA I would reccommend spending a day visiting Salem (Witch town) and then go to Rockport in the evening…beautiful little harbor town…again wonderful little antique shops and seafood restaurants on the water. The little strip of shops leads down to the waterfront, where they have a bunch of big boulders/rocks leading into the river…and people are able to climb thru to the tip…very pretty in the evening…

Re: New England Region

wow,, thanks guys.. I never knew New Port RI would be so much of fun, last time I went there was in early april, pretty boring at that time.

For kids, Children Museum Boston is a good place.

Canobie lake park in Salem,NH (just near the border of MA and NH) is far better than going to Six Flags, which is like 3 hours drive from Boston. What I liked in Canobie lake park was that every adult ride has a smaller/kids version as well. So everyone enjoys that.

Gemini, can you can give more details like exact location for Ogunquit beach in ME.

Thanks.

Afro I can't swim but I have been told that parasailing doesn't require that and also you can choose to dip your toes in water or not.. I may go for that though just for adventure! I have been recommended Dennis Parasail on cape so I will try that out and post my review later :-)

CoolBreeze.. we just put perkins grove, ogunquit, me in GPS and it got us to the spot!We only paid $5 for parking until midnight and then walked across the Marginal Walkway to the beach.. it was a long walk but since we were there just to relax and enjoy it didnt bother us! by the way, it should be only an hour and half from Boston!oh and also, this is the perfect time to go there because it wasn't crowded, found the parking easily, and didn;t have to deal with too many people soaking sun on the beach!

lets keep sharing the ideas and places!!! :-)

njgal.. one of my uni friends was from Gloucester and I went to her place once for eid and it was spectacular! I wish I had spent more time there!!

CoolBreeze, I went in late August and the weather was perfect. Very warm during the day and a little nippy in the evening. We were able to hit the beach and also do water activities like Kayaking and just taking random taxi's to nearby islands and wandering around. Block Island requires a day in itself, that also has beaches etc. I would definitely recommend renting either bikes to manually ride or better yet scooters to get around town. At night they had several restaurants/venues with concerts/live music etc. was a lot of fun. Plus me and my friend are seafood junkies so we loved trying food at different places till we couldnt breathe no more :)

can you pinpoint the locations on new port. I went to east beach and it was fileld with red tide. Before that I went to the city center which was good, but I was just unable to find a good beach, where did you do the Kayaking.

Thanks in advance.

I don't remember name of the beach..i think it was Easton, right next to the mansions where the Cliff Walk starts. True the water was blah...but if you take a ferry to Block island, the beach there is much better and nicer water :)

As for the Kayaking, check your hotels info desk. We found flyers to a bunch of places. There are several "Wharfs" in downtown Newport, if you follow America's Cup Avenue etc. We found the place in a flyer...it was next to where the big Marriot is. We were kayaking in the river, lots of boats around but still pretty safe. I wish I can upload images. I have pics from where I was and you can see nearby buildings/restaurants.

We stayed in a bed/breakfast called Admiral Weaver's Inn....the room we got was great and breakfast was even better in the morning. It was a short walk into the main heart of town. A friend had a not as great experience at the sma einn with the room so it depends on what room/place you stay. I definitely liked the experience of Bed n Breakfast as opposed to hotel because I can stay in a hotel anywhere.

Also I am sure you will be able to see plenty of sailin goptions by the various wharfs, i think Bowman's was one of them. We found a 2 hour sailboat trip into the bay, it was awesome. I think the sailboat holds like a max of 25-30 people and offer you drinks on board. Very enjoyable & relaxing on a warm summer day.

Also I remember when I went Goat Island was having a Jazz Festival at that time so it was nice. We didnt have tixx to the concert but were able to hear th emusic outside and hang out with snacks n stuff. Look it up on google. You can easily rent out bikes/scooters for a minimal fee. We did a lot of walking around town and ate wherever we were at the time, and just went by the menus posted outside. Whatever looked good, but I do know I ate a lot of steamed Crab, crab cakes, shrimp...etc.....yummmyyyy. If you are into history I would reccommend take the Mansion Tour, these victorian mansions are amazingg! At night if you just walk around, you'll see plenty of parties/live music venues and see what interests you.

You can rent Kayaks and such for a minimal fee.

^ nice experinces. But I am coming from Lahore with family for only 7 days around Boston area. So I need specific one day trips.. I dont want to go to six flags..

Re: New England Region

I love six flags!

If you think your kids will enjoy whale watching then it should be fun, New England Aquarium also offers whale watching tickets so you can get the combination ticket and that should take up all day!

For Martha’s vineyard, check this out:

try Canobie lake park, half hour drive from Boston, and excellent for all.. Six flags is far from Boston.

Re: New England Region

During the Memorial day weekend we rented a house down at Dennis, MA right at the corporation beach. We went for Dennis Parasail, which was half a mile aware that was awesome experience, the guys at Parasail are just excellent. We had to go again next day cause the weather changes its mood on Saturday while we were in the boat, so Mike asked us to come again tomorrow. Next day the weather was like the perfect most it can be.

We also went for Whale Watching trip from Province town, Cape Cod. We took Dolphin Fleet whale watch, ( they are much better than others). We had the pleasure of seeing so many whales and so close. The captain of the Dolphin Fleet said that you guys are actually very lucky, cause we were able to see so many of Humpback whales and literally within 6 feet of the ship. Many times the whales actually passed under our ship.

Provincetown is a very beautiful city, its actually the end most 'tip' area of Masachussettes/USA. Its great fun to visit that place. Also whale watchin in Province town is much cheaper than Boston.
