The article “Cancer drug’s test results expected soon” by Tanya Talaga, talks about the new cancer drug endostatin. It was created under the supervision of the famous Harvard surgeon and angiogenesis, Dr. Judah Folkman who has been working at Harvard University for 30 years to unlock the secrets of cancer and blood vessel formation. The drug has the potential to treat cancer as well as a variety of other angiogenic diseases such as blindness and arthritis that depend on new blood vessel growth. Endostatin is a natural antiangiogenic protein that has been shown to inhibit the growth of blood vessels, thereby starving cancerous tumours. By doing several laboratory experiments, Dr Judah Folkman and his team discovered that the drug expunged all kinds of different cancer growths in mice by the metastatic process.
However, the drug is under laboratory approval and human testing. Dr. Folkman said, “it will take years of human testing before the drug is available for people with cancer”. He is concerned that his results will lead to false hope, although he is very encouraged. In any event it will be several years before the drugs could be widely approved because it will take that time to be certain of longer-term effects. All tumours have to stimulate normal tissue to make thousands of new blood vessels to supply the growth, without this the tumour cannot enlarge. Any drug, which targets this process, will at the very least slow cancer growth but endostatin showed no cancer growth in mice. Studies showed that, the repeated administration of Endostatin is a natural compound and consistently shrank primary tumours and, unlike traditional chemotherapy, showed no drug resistance over time. The tumours reoccurred from the chemotherapy because the cancer cells become drug-resistance fast.
The drug is preventing new growths in mice where the original is removed as well as preventing tiny offshoots of the original tumour from progressing.
Dr. Folkman and his colleagues have decided to extend their significant efforts to accelerate the availability of angiogenesis products for the treatment of cancer, blindness, and other diseases that depend on new blood vessel growth.
Science hasn’t been able to find an appropriate cure of all types of cancers yet. However, several researches and efforts have been going along in that area. The discovery of endostatin by Dr Folkman is one of that efforts and it could become a possible solution to cancer treatment. This drug shows potential approach toward cancer treatment by destroying cancerous cells.
Although, this drug has only been tested on mice but since cancer in humans has similar characteristics as mice therefore this drug could be a potential cure of cancer. However unfortunately it has usually been seen that laboratory tests are no substitute for human trials.
Endostatin has risk and uncertainties but those for whom time is running out rush to try anything, willing to take enormous risks this could become a possible solution. There will be no shortage of volunteers due to this. One could argue that even without further animal tests for toxicity, those with advanced cancer that wish to do so should be allowed, at their own risk, to try endostatin.
The discovery of this drug could be encouraging news for those with advanced cancer and those who care for them, but unlikely to provide a practical treatment in the next two to three years. In the longer term, with other advances in genetics and treatments like tamoxifen for women at risk of breast cancer, the outlook for cancer cure is improving all the time.
The likely outcome of this drug is that it could become effective against some tumours at a particular stage in the disease process. However, it may have terrible longer-term side effects and would need (probably) to be taken for life.
