New baby: asking relatives to use hand sanitizer???

Masti,

There are** two** types of herpes simplex virus. There is HSV 1 and HSV 2.

HSV 2 is known as genital herpes; that's the one you're thinking of.

The woman in the article has HSV 1, also known as oral herpes or cold sores..... which deals with infection of the mouth, lips, and face.

I think the article said that the doctor had not diagnosed her as having herpes simplex 1. Perhaps if she had been diagnosed, the doctor might have warned her to be careful around her newborn. She wasn't aware that she was carrying the virus as it's not easy to detect and she wasn't aware of the effect on her child.
