NEVER Shake A Baby

NEVER Shake A Baby
In the last few years, doctors have identified a new threat to infants and young children. Shaken baby syndrome occurs when adults, out of frustration, anger or ignorance, strenuously shake an infant.

Infants younger than 1 years old have large heads and weak, underdeveloped neck muscles. So when they are shaken, the whiplash is tremendous. The infant’s brain literally is smashed against the skull. Brain damage, bleeding in and on the surface of the brain, spinal cord and eye damage, convulsions and death may be the tragic result. Although this severe damage is most common in young infants, toddlers also experience these injuries.

Unfortunately, many parents and caregivers do not know that shaking a child can seriously hurt him. Some have reported shaking children because they did not want to hit them. Or they have shaken an unconscious child after a fall or convulsion. Some parents of infants prone to apnea, (who sometimes stop breathing), have been instructed by a doctor or nurse to shake their babies to revive them. But NO ONE should EVER shake a baby.

Parents who spend a lot of time at home with young children deal with enough stress to bring a corporate executive to his knees. That’s why an important part of parenting is knowing when to take a deep breath and count to 10.

When I was a DJ in college, I always to read the "Never Shake a Baby" PSA. It's scary to think how many babies are regularly injured and killed due to shaking.

Damn Sahar, what else didn;t you do? DJ in college, Teaching Jewish kids in Rural Israel, That brief stint in the marine corps, the whole Friends guest spot and running Patton’s 3rd army division. WTF? You one busy gal. :k:

^ You forgot -- I once single-handedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants.

^ Sorry, I totally plagiarized that. Bad Sahar.

This is a very good posting. Many states in the US have passed laws that before a new mother is released from the hospital with her new baby, she must have a meeting with a certified Nurse who explains "shaken baby syndrome" and how to prevent it. Then the mother has to sign a release form stating that she understands. I had this meeting with each of my 3 boys. Its surprising that even by putting a baby down too hard can cause brain swelling and hence damage! Not only are their heads large and their necks weak, but they also have no bone covering the top of their brains - its right there under the skin until they are a few months old and the skull develops enough to cover the whole brain. Their little heads are very fragile and need very gentle care.

My wife is doing a forensic pathology rotation this month, you won't believe how many autopsies she's performed on babies that died from being shaken too hard for too long. Very very sad.
