Re: Never let your schooling prevent your education.
I think the correct quote is:
Never let school interfere with your education.
Its a quote by Mark Twain. I guess it means there are plenty of many things which we can learn outside of school and sitting on a desk at school which can make us educated. This quote does not underestimate the education given at schools but it does give importance to outside the school experiences and thats why children should be encouraged to learn from experiences other than their school lessons.

Peace .... I don't think that is what the term "Don't let your schooling interfere with your education" means ... Schooling actually means "being disciplined" ... Discipline can lead to restriction of thoughts ... thoughts which are often needed for enquiry and enquiry is essential to learning. Education is learning ...
Do we listen to our teachers out of 'fear' of the consequences of not conforming or because we "love" our subject and appreciate their insight?
Don't let the control that is exercised over us hinder our freedom to think ... that is what this means.

Oh thanks psyah
But when I searched the net, I found varying meanings. You will be interested in this book (do read the short description of the book given on this web site).

Correct me if I am wrong.
actually I agree with you Ashy, thats how interpret it, and asked my chen teacher and he said its a mark twain quote toy were correct!
Re: Never let your schooling prevent your education.
That is your prerogative … I personally believe Mark Twain’s quote can be seen as anti-school and promotes education in whatever format … the way you and the teacher have understood it is acceptable as well, many home educators use Twain’s statement to justify home education … http://www.homeschool.co.uk/resource/homeschooling-and-education-quotes.html
and when you couple it with Plato’s statement which is:
Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion has no hold on the mind. Therefore do not use compulsion, but let early education be rather a sort of amusement; this will better enable you to find out the natural bent of the child. - Plato
from the same link (actually there is better rendition than this one) … how it supports my point further that schooling can be a form of restriction.
It also makes no sense for a teacher to go against schooling so I wouldn’t expect anything other than what you have given from your teacher … but for a mentor or a philosopher it is a different matter.
Re: Never let your schooling prevent your education.
Nice topic inspiron, very inspiring. :k:
My take on this quote is that , schooling is one part of education , the other part is learning from other sources like books , now electronic media is also an important part of learning , learning from others , learning from mass media etc.
So schooling is not the end of education , it is the beginning of the educational process.
Re: Never let your schooling prevent your education.
Now at this point of my life, if we turn back and see how much we learnt from our schools and colleges, and how much we learnt from other sources, we can easily identify that we learnt equal if not more from other sources than what we learn in schools. These can personal experiences, learning from others' experiences, observations, feedback besides the sources mentioned by Mirch. Its also not that while we are in schools, our reception from other sources of education and knowledge is restricted and stopped. Sources other than school don't teach us purposely like we get taught at schools. We don't know what new things we will learn today from which source. So we should always be open to any new thing we learn from anywhere.
