In a diffreent thread it was mentioned how relationships are what really matter in your career. Since Gupshup is a big big network of people, its time to leverage it.
If you have a need for specific contacts please add them here.
Personally I am looking for contacts in the Management Strategy Business anywhere in the US or Canada, especially in the following firms:
IBM BCS
McKinsey
Bain
Booz Allen Hamilton
Boston Consulting Group
BearingPoint/KPMG Consulting
Braxton/Deloitte Consulting
I realize the current economy is very bad for these firms but I am willing to give it a shot…
Here is what you do. First stratify top tier strategy from big-5 types.
The way to get in the firms below is to either graduate from a top-20 school or be an industry recognized expert. Even if you are an undergrad, you will only offered a two-year contract...much like an I-bank analyst program. They expect you to go to B-school afterwards. It is highly competitive and getting networked in is not as easy as the second tier firms like Accenture and KPMG/butter point or whatever.
McKinsey
Bain
Booz Allen Hamilton
Boston Consulting Group
The hiring practices at these second tier firms are not as tough. But you will not be doing pure strategy work. And if you are, it is purely part of a large implementation planning exercise. Even on the business side you probably will not get close to seeing any sexy strategy work like M&A, Business restructing , New Product development, Market and b-planning etc. You can however get access to strategic work in terms of working on a large scale Siebel project and implementing the strategy that McKinsey put forth.
IBM BCS
BearingPoint/KPMG Consulting
Braxton/Deloitte Consulting
McKinsey - no Luck
IBM BCS - No Luck courtsey of PwC merger
BAH and KPMG - Working my way through contacts.. however they are lower level contacts so will have to wait and see.
Bain/Braxton/BCG - actively seeking contacts that I can use now and later on in my career.
I know for IBM BCS their hiring is distributed. Anyone else know what McKinsey and the rest of the firms do? Centralized MBA hiring or decentralized? Anyone know of any MBAs who have gotten into these firms this year?

McKinsey has not hired in 18 months. Infact business awas so bad that for the first time McKinsey asked partners to kicj back some working capital. McKinsey is centralied and recruiting heavy. Unless you are the maven on restructuring chinese banks or another specialty. Even then you have to be a top-20 B School graduate.
I am not where you live. But there are very desi networking groups like Tie and Netip that can provide a venue to extend your reach.
you also have to ask yourself, how do these firms fit in your career goals. where do you want to be, what type of expereince do you need for that etc.
From what you told me, you want to go on a CIO path. Does working on M&A or corporate restructuring give you that expereince or working on IT planning and infrastructure projects give you that exposure. or a little bit of both. You may have to understand that a little.
Second, what is your path to get there. strategy is good but focusing on what. if you sinply state I want to do strategy work, what does that mean and how does that fit in your goal to move towards a CIO role?
what strengths are you bringing to the table. operations mgmt type background to fix supply chains, financial skills to do M&A due diligence. Why should a company hire you and not someone else who is a fresh MBA. You have to bank on your strengths.
Think about it a little. maybe you need to expand your list to include companies like Sun and Unisys.
btw just being from a top 20 school will not guarantee you a placement. There are many other top20 b-school grads applying for the same positions. It will increase your chances over someone else but thats about it.
Tie..strated out as a VC/Corp Development org but has since evolved more into the Network and Bus. Dev. You should check it out.
NetIp: I know is primarily a networking org.
As the last word on McKinsey and ilk.. Top 20 school opens the door. Unless you are the foremost expert in trade finance or disruptive technologies with 30 yrs of management experience. Go to their website and check out the profiles of their consultants. You will get an idea as to qualitfiations and how you compare.
Chaltahi- I agree they focus on top 5-10 B schools. Afterall they have to impress their clients with the calibre of their employees. but I also know non top 20 can get in. It is just much more difficult. :(
Fraudia: I would actually love to work with any of the firms that deals with technology as a core part of their business such as Unisys or Intel or Sun. I am working on getting contacts through people but so far my understanding has been that they are on a hiring freeze like most other IT firms.

PS: By the way this thread was not meant to be classified for me. I was actually hoping people who are seriously looking for networking contacts would put what sort of contacts they seek and perhaps others around here could help them.
