networking help help

I am using XP Home (SP2) and a D-Link 604 router, my IP changes every 4 hours. After 4 hours (or probably when IP is renewed) and my PC is idle, XP looses internet connection. When I check my IP address I can release and renew IP address in the router configuration but it does not restore my internet connectivity. Once I tried to disable XP from attempting to renew the IP and after few trials & error I was able to do that… but lost that configuration when I had to reinstall the OS :bummer:

so now, tell me wherein XP do I tell Windows to not look for IP renewal but instead talk to router for all internet.

Re: networking help help

I guess this is what you are looking for.

  1. Control Panel --> Netwok Connections
  2. Select your connection, and then either
  • right click and select Properties, or

  • do File --> Properties

  1. In properties window that will eventually appear, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties button.
  2. Select appropriate settings in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, that will appear.

Good Luck and I hope it will solve.

Re: networking help help

Yaar I know all these steps, where to enable/disable IPs etc … but what I’m missing is what to enter where and what to enable/disable… tell me what do I enter info in these windows:

Re: networking help help

I can play with multiple configurations but the IP renews after 4 hours so I won't be able to know which configuration is working and vice versa.

Re: networking help help

Does your router alow you to assign a specific address to a specific machine, based on some MAC address? If so then you can use this option too.

Re: networking help help

Captain... did you try checking the router config interface for lease times? It's usually some setting like:

or

Re: networking help help

Umer.Ashraf: I'll check that, but I know that it allows to set IP address range for local machines.

Umar Talib: I think I had changed the lease time, what should it be? A week, some hours etc?

Re: networking help help

Captaan sahib, it may not be ur computer’s connection to the router that’s the problem. It may be the connection from your router to the DSL modem and out. Some DSL connection are sort of like dialup, like PPPoE. What you can do is get a “keep alive” kinda utility which would send out a few packets every so often and that way your connection would stay up.

Here are a few utilities that may help you out:

Re: networking help help

Your router should have an option to keep the connection alive. I had a similar problem and tried to locate such an option but failed to do so. Later when I checked with belkin, they directed me to the right option. Look hard, I'm sure the router has such an option.

Re: networking help help

Ohh here are the values you can use for your XP machine.

Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Use the following IP address: 192.168.1.101 (102, 103 etc.)
Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254 (IP-address from your Router)
Use DNS Server address (Prefered): 192.168.1.254 (IP-address from your Router)
Second DNS(Alternative): leave blank or put in first DNS-server

Re: networking help help

^^
Imagining your router's IP address is set to 192.168.1.254

Re: networking help help

^^ whaaa??? Did u just go and scan his network? :p

Re: networking help help

Modern OS offer enough utilities to scan networks and to find security holes, what they lack is just pure imagination power offered to human beings. :)

Re: networking help help

U must be from heera mandi :p

Re: networking help help

Finally playing around with configuration, this particular configuration worked, no more need of restarting PC to get internet connection working.

TofiBaba: My DSL is Dynamic IP (not PPPoE).

Umer.Ashraf: As you can see, my router does allow to tie a local IP to a particular MAC address.

Re: networking help help

Captain, nice to find your problem solved.

Only “ones and zeroes” can reside in a computer and on a network.
What is heera mandi? Some sort of network utility or a new network protocol.

Re: networking help help

erotic protocol behind Badshahi (?) Masjid in Lahore.

Re: networking help help

Thanks for the information, Captain. Thats y u r a Captain here. But as a constant learner, I have many questions in mind.

Is there any good material avaialable to get started with this protocol?
What are the associated security risks and how this protocol can be listed amongst other protocols that are proven and industry-verified?

TofiBaba, you seem to have enough awareness, can you provide a short refference guide or tutorial.

Re: networking help help

I was actually misinformed that my PC doesn’t need reboot anymore, so problem wasn’t really fixed until yesterday. I used Default Gateway/DNS Server address displayed by my router and entered them into XP’s TCP/IP Settings and that did solve the problem… This time I’m sure I solved it because when I last tried to access internet from home I was getting no connection then I logged onto my router and did as mentioned above and internet connection was re-established!
