Network Bandwidth Monitoring

Has anyone used a network bandwidth monitoring software or know of any good one that can give me live stats of the amount of bandwidth available on LAN…

i tried to restore a ghost image over the LAN today and it made things very very slow on the network… I can set a limit on the data transfer rate on symantec ghost, so i want to see how much i can set without slowing the speed of the network..

I am also looking for the software to tell me the amount of bandwidth per node is using… or the top ten sources of upload and download … also if it can map out the connections (spell out the destination IPs) that will be sweet…

Thanks,

Re: Network Bandwidth Monitoring

Solarwinds…it is not that expensive and does the job well. I used it in my previous life (job) extensively. You can also download a trial version on a desktop and set the date back…

Re: Network Bandwidth Monitoring

Thanks, I downloaded the trial version ... It has a lot of tools -- having fun :) :) :)

Re: Network Bandwidth Monitoring

I have used the following besides the SolarWinds applications. There are a few more of these out there as well.

Fluke Networks: Protocol Expert

Network Probe

Ethereal – This one is open source.

Re: Network Bandwidth Monitoring

Here are a few more that I’ve used quite a bit:

Ofcourse all the above are windows version. Ethereal has been ported to all different platforms.
Wh kind of hubs/switches are you using? You may be able to setup the Ghosting on a separate LAN or even vLAN, which could help the network choking.

Re: Network Bandwidth Monitoring

Thanks for your recommedations … Here is what i have tested so far..

Solar Winds
They have collected all the IP utilities in their suite… It is very comprehensive though.. Loved playing around with it.. I wish they give complete access to all the features in trial version.

Network Probe was great…It would have been nice to see the complete addresses of the hosts in the trial version. I did a mac address lookup and found out about the connections i wanted to know about. It did the job of telling the amount of data hosts were transferring

Retina Network Security Scanner was great …very good product indeed… very comprehensive. itney keeray nikale mere PC mein k buss..

For bandwidth monitoring, they have IRIS, which doesn’t only show you raw packets but reconstructs them so you can see the webpages live as they go over the network. Check its demo here.

TF, we have the Cisco 3500 inline power switches… [IP phones]

p.s. I ghosted a PC today thru ghostcast server.. at 50MB/s … there were no issues (atleast not reported)

Re: Network Bandwidth Monitoring

Also try ntop. I am absolutely in love with this thing. Gotta have open source baby.
