Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Scenario…
i currently have a drive that is shared over the network thru a PC…so when the PC turns off, i lose the share. I want the data structure to be available at all times with access controls

I was looking at some NAS solutions (for home) — there are two options by linksys… one is a true NAS link](Linksys | Networking & WiFi Technology)] and the other is a Network Storage Link link](Linksys | Networking & WiFi Technology)]. Please let me know which one u think is better or if there is a better product out there for the purposes of data management …

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

If u want to data available 24/7 without a PC then buy the first one, otherwise second one.

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

aren’t they both stand alone units?

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Lovely advice. Why didn’t u just say “wateva!” :hehe: j/k najim saein.

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Genius bhai, both of them will work for you. The difference is that with the first one u have storage device builtin that u can expand later if you want. While the second one just give u an interface for your USB storage devices to be available for the network. So in the second case u will need to buy a USB HDD along with this device that u can share with the network through this device.

I will go for the second option cuz its more flexible in use.

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

from what i can see, first..

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Does your currently shared device support USB? In this case it is better to go for NAS.

Otherwise instead of buying NAS+USB HDD, u can consider NSL, but it is limited to 120GB and still as a third option (or a better 2nd option for 120GB storage), consider some router like 'IOGEAR 120GB Broadband Office Storage Server'. There will be some significant cost drop. But it is not intended if you are using Gigabit Ethernet.

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Ethernet solution is always better when it comes to NAS, in my opinion. Some will consider USB better. Thats the only reason I'd go for the first one.

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

thanks guys.... when i first started looking at it... i was like ... ofcourse the second one...

it wasn't that simple afterall

najim bhai, r u thinking abt the speed difference b/w the first one n second one..
seems like first one will be faster... and the second one is ethernet as well right.. the first one connects to router and IDE HD at other end.... the second one is a device that takes in ethernet and then connect two USB storage drives

umer bhai, i have a 120GB IDE drive as a slave in my primary PC-- upon changing my passwords, sometimes, i get permission errors in XP... and then i end up saving stuff on three diff computers.... n then finding them is always an adventure.... plus i want the storage to be available 24/7

what do you guys do for storage and data management?

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

^^ 1 machine with 460 gigabyte mirrored volume.. it becomes Z: as soon as anyone logins to their computers

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

^....but will still be enough for just 460 gmail accounts. :)

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

^ around 230 gmail accounts cause one account is around 2GB ...

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Ditto, I have a server with 350 gb of storage. Every few weeks I dump all downloads on laptops or what not on that server.

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

They gave me 1GB, so for me it will remain 1GB.:)

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

okay, so I read the details of the products and I think the first one is a good option. It is expandable, a bit faster I think and seems like a reliable solution. If you really want to add some portability aspect to your solution [which I believe is the reason you want to go for the second option] then you can buy a USB HDD enclousre in order to contain the secondary HDD and carry it while you need it.

How much do they cost btw? Maybe that can be an important deciding factor that you might have ignored?

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

 wth ..NOW we are discussing 460 and 230gmail accounts?

u know there is more to life than net and more to net than forwards and email romance? jei..zass..

Re: Network Attached Storage (NAS)

A 120GB gmail account with unlimited inet access will probably eliminate or reduce the need for 120B NAS. Gmail is already used by many to store songs, documents and short video clips and access them anywhere.
