Network Admins: How do I install a network printer

Ok, I need to share a printer between 20 PCs. I’m running windows 2000 server.

How do I get the server (windows 2000) to detect the printer once I have plugged the network cable from the back of the printer into the network port? How do I obtain the IP address of the printer?

I also need to amend the logon script so that the user can print to the printer.

All help appreciated.

you can print the configuration sheet from printer menu. YOu can also change it from printer configuration menu.

^ cheers! Is there another way of obtaining it?

You can go to the DHCP server and see if you can spot the printer there.
Once you have the IP, on Windows 2000 server when you go to add the printer choose local printer (uncheck the Automatically detect), then create a port choosing the Standard TCP/IP port, next put in the drivers and voila, u have a network printer. You can do the same on the PC's as well, but its easier to just share out the printer from the Server. That way on the PC when you specify the network printer it just downloads the drivers from the server.

once spotted in the dhcp you can install printer automatically detected because new network printers comes with auto detections utility built-in and it will most probably detect the printer if not then uncheck the auto detect and install and ad ip for the printer name if asked.
Once installed, detecting and installing on the workstations will be much easier.

Much easier to assign your printer an IP address and then printing it that way across your network. You can even use your iPhone to do the printing that way.
