Nervous & Restless

I hate to do presentations or talks, I hate to do any thing in front of many people. I get so nervous and unconfident when I stand in front of a group of audiences. I do not know why but sometimes I feel that I cannot speak anymore, it’s just at the beginning but after several minutes I feel normal and confident. Indeed, I like to do long presentations because I can overcome flustering after a while but in some cases the presentation should be short meaning that I feel restless during the whole presentation. I know it’s a matter of time because people become more confident when they get used to do presentations or seminars. My friend has exactly the same problem even worst than me, one day he discussed this problem with his tutor, the tutor tried to encourage him and he told him that even he is a lecturer but he always gets flustered at the first ten minutes and then he feels normal.

Do you usualy feel like this?

Are there any suggestions to be more confident when presenting something?

Re: Nervous & Restless

all i can say NATALIA that this is natural and i guess everyone goes thru this, all u have to do is face it and over time u will grow over it.

Re: Nervous & Restless

hmm I know I'm the same case as you I fret about presentations before but once the first couple of minutes are over I'm so confident I don't want to leave the limelight. just do practice sessions to raise your comfort level.

Re: Nervous & Restless

One can avoid this state by doing alot of practice before the final presentation and also more u study and spend time with ur TOPIC ,hence more u have command on the subject, then more u can speak there and the more u be confident and enjoy the game.

Re: Nervous & Restless

I like to address an audience. Since childhood I’ve been doing speeches and acting on stage (school plays etc.) so I am used to it and I am comfortable doing it. That’s another thing that I don’t really look for stuff to do before an audience but when I have to do it, I do it. It’s fun and I love it when I am leading and talking while others are listening to me and following me. I feel in control, in power

Re: Nervous & Restless

I used to feel like that ohh I don't know sometime in highschool...probably the first years...
Alhumdulillah, I am now totally over it. I have a presentation tomoro and I am not really scared at all :D.
I guess what you really need to do is stop caring/ thinking about what other ppl will think or are thinking and saying about you and your presentation...It's your marks and that's what matters!! Let your personality shine through...whether they like it or not!!

Re: Nervous & Restless

natalia,

one advice. look only over the heads of the listeners and you wont feel as on the spot, while making a presentation. create a good power point. rehearse before presenting in class or office.

best,

Re: Nervous & Restless

if ur well prepared and know what ur going to talk about it generally reduces anxiety at least for me.
also try to hold a pen in ur hand while presenting it will prevent u from fidgeting and showing ur nervousness
