South Africa’s first black president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has died today (5th December)
BBC News - South Africa’s Nelson Mandela dies
Everyone has to leave this world, but it's sad to see such people going.
But what a life and what accomplishments. A true legend
When you spread goodness you leave with nothing but goodness behind.
What we do in life echoes in eternity.
There won't be a soul born, from now until the end of time, who won't hear Madiba's echo.
Let freedom regin. The sun never set on so glorious a human achievement. - Nelson Mandela
Re: Nelson Mandela has died
it's so sad to hear this expected news...he's been sick for a while and it's finally his advanced age that got to him...May he rest in peace.
a great man, indeed. when i was in South Africa, our escorted bus tour took us to his cell where he was confined for 27 long years...he finally brought the apartheid down with supoort from all over the world.
we sure gonna miss him and his leadership and will also surely talk about him for decades to come.
Good bye, Mr. Mandela. :(
Nelson Mandela has died
A great man indeed. Inna lillahi wa inna lillahi ra'joun
Let not mourn his death but celebrate his achievements. He might be gone but his vision and message live on through anybody who believes in humanity. As someone who was born in south africa and spent his early childhood years there I saw the amazing work he did first hand and remember just barely him visiting schools in the area.
Re: Nelson Mandela has died
We send our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Nelson Mandela’s friends, family, and the people of his nation. President Obama had this to say: “Today, the United States has lost a close friend, South Africa has lost an incomparable liberator, and the world has lost an inspiration for freedom, justice, and human dignity -- Nelson Mandela is no longer with us, he belongs to the ages. While we mourn his loss, we will forever honor Nelson Mandela's memory. He left behind a South Africa that is free and at peace with itself -- a close friend and partner of the United States. And his memory will be kept in the hearts of billions who have been lifted up by the power of his example.”

Last time the world mourned someone this much and to this extent was Mother Teresa, this time it's even bigger, Mandela is on every channel, every newspaper. He was the icon of forgiveness and peace. A great loss indeed.
Re: Nelson Mandela has died
RIP Mendala
Isn't it funny how the Western mainstream media is going crazy focusing on Mendala as an all forgiving, peace loving dancing African hippie whereas the real Mendala was all about freedom, liberation, struggle and resistence. He was a revolutionary. He was a fighter!
This is the same man who was branded as a terrorist by likes Thatcher and Regean (Is anyone surprised?). Today warmongers like Obama and Cameron shed crocodile tears in front TV and calling him their hero while Mendala was everything, literally everything these guys stand for. Their speech was vomit inducing.
I'm not sure how ANC would now operate and how far they go now now they are out of Mendela's shadow and lost the glue that held the party and its public affiliation together. The ANC must finish what Mendela started. The struggle for complete equality, economic liberation and better standars for living the for blacks is still far from being accomplished. We may very well see a totally different South Africa in ten years time. I am not sure which way the tide would turn. With that, I am interested to read a critical analysis of his post prison negotiations. It couldn't be all black and white.
In other news, Nutty-yahoo didn't attend Mendala's memorial. Surprise, surpise.
Re: Nelson Mandela has died
I heard that Israelis sent a delegation. Of course, Mandela's "choice words" about Israel would get a response.
Re: Nelson Mandela has died
^ South Africans, be blacks, whites, etc hate Israel very much.

Yes, Mandela was considered a terrorist by US until 2008.
Mandela sided with Palestine and that upset Israel. Even today, South Africa is the first and perhaps only christian country in the world to condemn Israel's barbarism in Palestine, they are the first to ban it's products. On government's call, Israeli products get removed from shelves in matter of time.
Regarding ANC, it has already been divided into 3 parties while Mandela was still alive. They will never carry Mandela's legacy.
Re: Nelson Mandela has died
The ANC lost the moral compass long time ago but now they've completly lost the good PR cover up and a USP after Mandela's death.
The real test of Mendala legacy and a true test of SA democracy along with a new phase of black struggle will come when SA will have a non ANC governement and possibly a white head of state.
Not that I think SA will implode any second but the current situation very much feels like the calm before the storm.
