Shaykh Hamza is absolutely right, we really need to take knowledge from traditional scholars. We shouldn't interpret the Quran and Hadith, we leave it to the knowledgeable people of our time. Just like we do not perform surgery without becoming an expert in that field, we should not interpret the Quran and Hadith without becoming an Aalim. Allah says go ask the people of knowledge if you do not know, we should be doing that rather than opening up the book and coming up with our own fatwas. :( extremely dangerous... we see the result right infront of us, we don't have to go far, go into your local masjid, you will see so many examples of "weekend muftis".
First we need to have the correct understanding of what a scholar is. Through this understanding we develop the love and respect. If we wish to preserve the knowledge, we need to love, respect and trust the people of knowledge, just like we respect and trust a doctor. If we don't may Allah save us.
Allah knows what gathering that was but Shaykh Hamza used language that a layman like I cannot understand... :( all those terms.. anyway, great lecture.
