Re: neem Hakeem and company

i would suggest you consult a good Urdu dictionary.

Re: neem Hakeem and company

Alright, I consulted Fairoz-ul-lughaat. And you are right that neem, in its literal sense, means half. However, neem hakeem is defined as inexperienced hakeem and neem razi is defined as somewhat raazi. So depending on the context, it could mean incomplete and partial.

Re: neem Hakeem and company

Absolutely!

Urdu words like this one have no concrete, mathematical or absolute meaning.

This is the beauty of Urdu.

There is no hard core meaning of this word 'neem' to make it only applicable into mathematical measure such as half, 50% or Nisf.

This word can be and has been used as in qualitative sense.

Poetry itself is not absolute and one may argue but Mir would not have used this word in concrete sense such as half or fifty percent.

That would take the charm of poetry away.
**
Mir Un **Neem
Baaz Aankhon Mein
Saari Masti Sharaab Ki Si Hai

Does anyone really think that Mir thought in terms of 50% or half open eyes when he said this?

And

When Faiz said:

Hua Jo Teer e Nazar Neem Kash Tuo Kia Haasil
Mazaa Tuo Jab Hai Ke Seenay ke Aar Paar Chalay

Did he think of exactly half or 50% of heart being divided?

Nope.

One can use neem word as partial or incomplete or not being accurate.

If someone is not really convinced yet, then define

Neem Mullah Khatra e Imaan.

Can a Mullah or Mullah's qualification be measured as 50% or Nisf?

yup…neek kii miswaak bahot use kii hai laRakpan meN! neem products are a big business in India/Pak and they range from toothpaste to soap to oil to whatever you can imagine…it’s a great antiseptic agent.

i remember we used to put neem twigs between the layers of woolen clothes to avoid damage by moth. we used to tuck away all winter clothing in a steel trunk during winter months.

they also used neem twigs/leaves for wahing the maiyat [deda body] and putting some on top of the grave’s wooden planks.

Re: neem Hakeem and company

thanks for details but all I remember is playing under Neem trees in Pakistan and also palying with the “fruit” on Neem called “nimoliye”. They look like mango so we used them as an ingredient of our play when a mango was needed
