Get a Dell.

Customize it yourself, so that you're getting the least amount of speed, space, etc. and that way you could end up with a low costing laptop.

Get a Dell dude! Yaar its the best. Their warranty is a killer! I broke my laptop like 4 times in the past 3 years and each time they fix it. They even add better add ons.

I would recommend you Dell and gateway... and if you going for second hand.. I can help you.... Pentium III for around 400-500 with DVD and good ram..

I've got a Dell. It is pretty good and cheap too.

If you want to splash out, go for a Sony Viao or a Toshiba.

Get whatever brand you want to have. However.....one suggestion, go for wide screen. You will thank me!
