In two weeks I’m leaving my job for maternity leave .. I’m giving a farewell party to my colleagues.
I am about to order a cake, but dont know what to write at the top? But I was thinking of a pic of a cute baby instead of writing anything .. so does anyone have any pictures of cute babies that can be made on the top of a gorgeous cake.
Another thing, I was thinking of making something pakistani .. samosas! I need some nice veggie samosas recipes. Maybe even gulab janam, as some of my colleagues loved those. But for gulab janam I already have a recipe.
What else be there, white or wheat bread with different toppings! Might even get the party service take away stuff.
So what other food thats easy to make and maintain .. as backup??
Cake idea is amazing Saadia.. sounds cute too .. I couldn't find any baby pictures to put on the cake but i did find some really intresting cakes you might like... :-)
Ingredients:
4 soft taco(tortilla)
2 boil potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch cubes
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1/4 cup peas
1 teaspoon chopped cilantro
1 teaspoon garam masala
1 tablespoon oil, plus oil for frying
1 tablespoon all purpose flour
2 tablespoon water to make a paste
Method:
Heat oil in a pan. When oil is hot, put in cumin seeds. when they burst, add red chili powder, potatoes, peas and salt. Mix well then add garam masala and cilantro. Set aside. In a small bowl mix all purpose flour, water and make a paste. Cut tortilla in half. Fold it into triangle shape, place the potato filling in and stick the edges tightly with paste.
Heat oil in a frying pan. Carefully slip it into the hot oil. Fry until crisp and golden.
^ Well, here its the othe way around .. If its your birthday or your leaving the job .. you give the party not the others. I didnt know it differently ..
saadia....i make samosas from scratch .....you need the recipe for their pastry/sheet...right??
its flour n ghee with a ratio of 4:1 .....meaning if u r using 400 gram of flour ...add 100 grams of ghee n then knead it with as much water as required add some salt ...n cumin too if you like!
i think yes.....but i think if you don't want to use ghee better option is margarine ....but you can try oil too! it does change the texture a bit though!
Saadia, instead of making samosas from the scratch why don't you make them with puff pastry or chinese egg roll wrap sheets. Also, maybe you can buy potato and onion perogies and serve them with tamarind chutney, green chutney or sweet and sour chilli sauce to give it a desi touch. You can fill puff pastry sheets with layer or zeeray allo ki tarkari and make it vegetable puff pastry. You can also add the seekh kabab type masala to boiled potatoes and make them like seekh kabab and bake them to make vegetable seekh kabab. Some other things that you can have: egg sandwich, cracker with cheese, nachos with cheese dip/spread, pita puffs with any type of spread, bruschetta...or you can bake any type of bread with paneer and layers of desi chutneys to make it desi. Hope that helps :)
Qrius, good ideas, I'll try to get these chinese egg roll sheets from the desi shop .. infact I tried the samosa this weekend, the recipe from Afia was just fine, just need to make the filling a bit better better, so that it can be liked by the non desi colleagues.
Other than gulab jaman and samosas, (that I will make before and freeze, will fry them at the morning of the party), I am getting ready made things like italian bread and ready made toppings, these things are already a hit, so wont go so wrong there.
Oh I forgat its a breakfast party.
Oh btw, does anyone know, if I should use onion in the samosa filling?
