Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

What is a secure host solution for domain/web hosting and email for a project on tight budget constraint? It should be reliable too.
Checked with godaddy but their email can turn expensive plus I heard their rates vary.
Also with google, one email is free but sebsequent is 5$ per user. Any reviews?

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

Did you already check out dotster? About 15/year for domain hosting and basic web hosting $3.75/month ( includes 100 email addresses ). You might have to pre-pay.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

Just checked them. The $3.75 per month is only for the initial term you sign up for. I have pasted their info below:

Hosting and Domain Renewal Pricing

Dotster often offers promotions, coupons and special offers to customers during their initial term. Please note that special offers are limited-time promotional prices that are available to new customers and are valid for the Initial Term only, and not for successive or renewal periods.

Dotster hosting plans typically renew at the regular rate. Regular rates for the Delux Plans are:

36-month term: $7.49 a month (billed $269.64 for 3 years)
24-month term: $8.49 a month (billed $203.76 for 2 years)
12-month term: $9.49 a month (billed $113.88 for 1 year)

Dotster occasionally offers introductory rates for new and transferred domains. Introductory rates are valid for the initial term only. Domain renewal rates will be available through your control panel.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

Did not see that. Still, I would say that is pretty affordable.

Another option is to check out one of the cloud services ( amazon.com ?). Many of them have free options with minimal configuration. Security and reliability are not a top priority for them, though.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

how about godaddy?

Btw we need multiple web hosting (for testing) and databases.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

Can you do it on a local machine? That way you will only need a domain. The link below is for your web hosting and database. If you need help on setting up an apache2 config let me know. I am hosting about 6 django web apps and 8 postgresql databases on one machine.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

We host our clinic's website on godaddy. It is a bit expensive, but for us it is a business expense. Promotional period we paid $190 for two years. WordPress webhosting, unlimited email, calendar ( was free as part of promotion ) and 2 GB storage. For the next 2 years, we paid around $400.00. We don't use databases, but use webservices to integrate with our patient management system.

Can you use subdomains to do testing etc? Many of these plans offer free subdomains.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

What kind of app you are planning to host? List technologies.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

:k:

Maybe you can make do with something like dyndns.org and not buy a domain.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

why do you need multiple hosting/domain names for testing ? you can setup your local boxes to do so ... if not, then there are 10s of cloud vm's that you can use. Not sure what technology stack you are using but lots of vm's do provide you pure linux vm that you can setup for any purpose. checkout cloud9, nitrous, koding etc ...

The software that i work on is a multi-region software and we test it by mocking the other regions. We mock it either using inmemory servers with inmemory db ... or we set up temporary servers on our local vm's ... but again, it depends on what and how the software is designed.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

Thanks for your suggestions. This is a whole new setup with less resources so more time will be consumed on other stuff so the less of a headache the better it is, atleast for now.

One domain is needed to host our own website. Testing websites are needed to host the client’s websites temporarily to show them progress. As far as technologies are concerned, it’ll be mainly PHP related solutions like magento, joomla, drupal etc. As a startup the cost is needed to be lowest and as i said, less of the other headache as a lot of focus will be on marketing. Hosting packages seem to be the way to go for now instead of having our servers setup.
hope that answers the questions, will keep you posted. :k:

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

go with cloud9 or koding then. you can easily build your vm for php stack and as a free user, you can have 1 vm which is accessible from everywhere. once you run the server within the vm, cloud9/koding will tell at what ip/port you can access the php server … its the easiest and cheapest solution that you can do as of now.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

Wonder if they will allow me to compile WitchX on it

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

what is this ?

you do have root privileges on the vm ... and as long as its related to web-development, I am pretty sure you can do it.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

yeah, but I think the package manager points to a fixed location, and only a subset of packages are available...how do I override the repository location in apt-get?

( its an irc client )

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

hmm, yeah, I guess they wouldn't let you over-ride package manager. Must be something in the docs. Never needed it so never checked it.

btw, why do you want to add an IRC client on your VM box ? why don't you use web based IRC clients which you can connect from anywhere and don't have to install the client on machine.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

I'll suggest digital ocean. With Git integration its really easy to create sub-domains on the fly and push any branch to it. Pretty much single command would do it. We are using it for all our prototyping and development.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

And now this: New feature: Add your own machine + a DigitalOcean offer!

Apparently you can now add your DigitalOcean droplets to Koding.
@SID_NY Also look at Docker. They are also competitively priced.

Re: Need suggestion for a domain/email hosting solution

yup. thats a big plus
