Thanks for bumping this up, Little Human.
American Desi, Ask your friend to take a look at this site http://www.discoverislam.net/dinew/bookshelf/bookmain.asp She can check out any, and all, of the 20 books listed and they will mail it to her for free. Two in particular she may like are “Gender equity in Islam” and “Women in Islam”. Let her know she will get them for free, she doesn’t have to pay a single cent.
If she has access to a computer and would be able to download pdf files, then check out this site http://www.iad.org/PDF-Files.html
This has a good list of sources for online/free books http://www.islamic-knowledge.com/Download.htm#books
http://www.islammessage.com/books/e/Bookslist.htm - has over 400 free online books on Islam
i haven’t read this book but the title sounds interesting - “The ideal Muslimah” http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/humanrelations/womeninislam/idealmuslimah
Muslim Women’s League Reading List http://www.mwlusa.org/publications/positionpapers/recommended.html
This is an interesting website http://sisters.islamway.com/modules.php?name=Topics
Finally, one more suggestion - a good book for her, as an American female interested in Islam, might be “Daughters of Another Path: Experiences of American Women Choosing Islam”, by Carol Anderson Anway. It’s available off Amazon. “Struggling to Surrender” by Jeffrey Lang is good, too, for Muslim reverts although he does not specifically discuss it from the perspective of a female (obviously coz he’s a guy). Jeffrey Lang, Karen Armstrong, John Esposito, and Michael Wolfe have all written fantastic books on Islam. Any book by them is informative and accurate.

Assalamu Alaykum,
In my opinion, Quran is the best book to give someone if they want to learn about Islam. You might want to think about that.
