Please help me on choosing nice hotels in Salzburg and Amsterdam. I would prefer advice from people who have actually stayed at those places. Nothign fancy…it should be close to the happening areas… and somewhat affordable.
Thanks.

Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
Never stayed overnight in Salzburg, but it's definitely beautiful. Loads of sights. Sorry, not much very helpful, I know. :p
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
I should say that you should definitely check out the guest houses as opposed to north american style hotels. They are more comfy and intimate and definitely more attractive .... at least in the Salzburg area. We stayed just across the border in Germany.
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
In Salzburg .. its actually difficult to recommand something, as don't know your preferences. I been there a long time ago, but the city center is the most happening place ... as to lots of tourists during summer. The main street there is the Getreidegasse ...
You could also stay in a pension/guest house, they are somewhat smaller .. err maybe cheaper.
If you want more info, maybe I can get some links for you?
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
I like the idea of bed n breakfast type places. Do they entertain guests on short stays... two to three nights? Saadia, any help would be wonderful. But please don't do google for me...if you know what I mean.
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
Funguy, if you can, you should go to Chiemsee/Chiemgau in Bavaria. I'm not sure if I'm getting the name right but it's right on the border, very close to Salzburg. It's famous for King Ludwig's castle ... the one that's made out of gold. It's gorgeous.
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
Mehnaz - That's great. I am more of a nature kinda guy. Give me a waterfall over a gold castle any day and I will be a content man. Are there any scenic drives, out in the countryside of Austria... I am really not familiar with that part of Europe. I will be in Dusseldorf for a conf and plan on taking some additional time off for doing the train thing for a week... my options are;
Western Austria / Interlaken Switzerland OR
Amsterdam / Cologn Germany
I think I wanna do Austria... how is Germany?.
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
It's all scenic, that whole area around Bavaria/Salzburg. You'll love the mountains. I have some pics of Salzburg, I can upload them later on if you want.
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
I asked around and one of my colleague recently went to Salzburg City and stayed at this place, “Hotel Zur Post Salzburg” Price around 55 Euro for single room.
He told me that he was pleased with the service. The Hotel has Breakfast Buffet, (which I am sure you will love) .. The place is not located in the city center, but around 20 minutes walking distance from the city center, where the main attractions are, he told me that there is a bus right in front of the hotel which takes you to the center in around 5 minutes. (I personally wouldnt like to stay at a crowded place like the city center but somewhat outside like this, with a good bus service.)
What kind of entertainment do you like?
there is so much you can do in Salzburg as it has lovely scenery, as Mehnaz mentioned. You will need maybe 2 days to do the city touring and maybe spent 1-2 days outside the city at the countryside.
This seems very appealing, I think, if my health allows, I might also go there this summer. Also in western Austria, Innsbruck is another scenic city, but havent been there personally.
If you need any more additional information, then let me know. I’ll try to help.
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
If you are a “nature kinda guy” then I wouldn’t recommend staying anywhere in Salzburg City.
My wife and I drove to Western Austria in June last year. We stayed in a hotel in Hallstatt which is less than one hours drive from Salzburg City. AND IT WAS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! You see a few pics of that trip here.
Hallstatt is a nice little town with a lot of history located right next to “Hallstätter See” a beautiful lake. The hotel we stayed at was the Hotel Bergfried and we had a direct view to the lake from our room. The prices were ok too, ie we paid 36 Euro per person = 72 Euro for the room. You can see more details about that hotel at their website here.
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
Umer, Salzburg is scenic in the sense that it's surrounded by the mountains/alps and he can actually go into the mountains do hiking, nature walks, and even explore (inside) the famous salt/glass mountains there.
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
Thank you Umer and Saadia. This is great help. I really appreciate it.
As I will be flying into Zurich, it would make sense to stop at Hallstatter on my way to Salzburg. I am buying the Europass. Looking at the pics, this little town is exactly what I need for a break. Thanks guys n gals.
Mehnaz - yep...I love old cities... I am still in love with Quebec City. I am hoping Salzburg will be even better.
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
Aww so your not coming to Amsterdam? :-/
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
Who would go to Holland when he has the chance to come to Austria? ![]()
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
Exactly. The lift to the salt mountain of Hallstatt is a 2-minutes walk from the Hotel I was talking about in my message.
Btw, Salzburg is a province of Austria => Salzburg City and Hallstatt are both within that province.
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
U have a point there! :-/
I’d definitely go for Austria
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
U will not regret going to Salzburg/Salzburg city, maybe spent one day at Salzburg city and spend the rest days roumning around the country side, the mountains, the fresh alp air will certainly do you/anyone well. Salzkammergut area is one of the most beautiful/peaceful area in Austria .. have fun and show us the pics afterwards.
Shinno - your too late we already convincenced funguy to come to Austria :-)
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
hello there,
Try out some pension Hotels in salzburg. They are not cheap like younth hostel but better than them as you easily get single or double room accomodation. But Germans occupy them mostly so better book them earlier. I give you some of the wesbite may it will help you. the rooms will from 35 to 50 €http://www.gaestehaus-gabi.com/ (in this hotel you will find single room for 48 € while double for 38 €. http://www.sbg.at/sportalm-hintermoos/axel/ (also try this one its inclusive breakfast, its pretty cheap in summer while in winter the prices are double.) more you can check http://www.koeniggut-salzburg.at/english/preise_en.htm (this one seems also not bad). I would say try google with search Pension hotel salzburg. Do not get scared if you get german hits, remember most hotels webiste will be in english. just try to click, may it will help you. (I tried for younth hostel didnt find much information.)
Re: Need info on Salzburg and Amsterdam
oops I forgot for Amsterdam, here you gohttp://www.hostelsweb.com/cities/amsterdam.html …in this website you will find pretty long list of cheap accomodations, its like youth hostel. Otherwise I doubt you will find cheaper than 65€ per night. check it out. If you cant get the price there then copy and paste the name of hotel in google…there you may find website of that one ![]()
enjoy ciao for now
