need help with some Urdu words

I grew up in the Netherlands and my Urdu has always been mixed with English and Dutch words. I’m trying to learn better Urdu now, but dictionaries are confusing me about the word for ‘purple’. Online it says: جامنی رنگ. My book says: اودا or ارغوانی. So which one is most commonly used?

Pink is also confusing me, my dictionary calls it ghulabi, but also pyazi rang, why pyazi, am I misreading that?

How about the colour brown? I know the English is ‘Urdufied’, online it says: براؤن. My dictionary however calls it bhora rang. So which is more commonly used?

Re: need help with some Urdu words

Pink is gulabi

And Google says the same for purple and brown جامنی and boora

To each his own

Typically I will use stuff to identify/explain color like purple will be "aloo bukaray ka rang" or brown as "chocolate wala" rang or any other colors which I cant think of the Urdu word for it

Re: need help with some Urdu words

Okay, thanks.

Re: need help with some Urdu words

I think with passage of time, colors took their names from fruits. Like Orange from the fruit orangae. In Sindhi, both fruit and color orange are called 'Narangi' in Urud color is 'Naranji', but fruit is Kinnu.

Same goes with coolors you asked. 'Purple' is jamni as it got same color as fruit 'Jaman'. Same goes true for 'Violet' as 'Banafshi' flower got same color.

Pink is Gulabi, may be we got pink roses / gulab in our part of world and also known as 'Piyazi' as onion outer is pink.

Brown is 'badami' as it matches almond color.

Re: need help with some Urdu words

Thank you for the detailed explanation, muqawwee123, I'm starting to understand some of the names of colours I used to see on cloth material we sold. So it wasn't all just made up or those designs, but really the name of these colours.

I grew up calling tangerines kinnu and oranges malta. I thought narangi is a Hindi word. I have a lot to learn.

Re: need help with some Urdu words

I think… we should have a thread on colors… :hmmm:

Re: need help with some Urdu words

Good idea. It's fascinating to explore where the words came from and which ones are commonly used.
