Need Help with my career?

Hello everyone..

Hope you all are doing well. Guys I need your help with my education.

Here’s my story I’ll try to keep it as short as possible.

I’m currently 20 but I’ve had to leave my studies for 5 years due to some reasons and now I only have matriculation degree. I was brilliant at my studies. I want to continue my edu again so I need your advises on which profession I should choose? (by keeping my age in mind)

I think I should let you know and you’ll definitely consider it weird but I don’t have too much love or passion for a particular field for say medics or etc.. as girls here in pk are crazy over medics! rolly eyeZ

Khyr so right now I’m considering two fields medics and Psychiatry. Medics just for its scope and bright future cos if I go for it I
ll go for AKU. But you see I’m 20 now and hence I’d be around 27/28 when I complete my simple MBBS.. or in short I’ll be budhi then, lol then I was considering Psychiatry but first am not sure if you have to do MBBS for it or simply MA in Psychology? And are there any good Psychiatry institutes here in Pk? So what would you recommend?

BTW do you have career counsellors here? Or if someone can guide me to related persons, who may give me a sound advise?

If you have any ideas or advises for anyother profession besides these two, that may suit me.. just let me know

Any help would be much appreciated.

Looking forward to your replies..

thanks all

Re: Need Help with my career?

BTW by choosing MA studies I'd have an option of studying Arabic and English too. Cos you dont have much burden in FA so you can easily study anything else in evenings etc while this is not the case with medical studies.. thought i should let you know..

Re: Need Help with my career?

first thing u have to ask yourself is what do you like to do.
for psychiatry, you need to have a medical degree.
so if you have some concerns about your age when you finish up, then niether of these would work.

is your concern with age due to a thought that u will be older than your colleagues or is it some rishta wishta type concerns.

Re: Need Help with my career?

Well you can say its both types :( I don't want to marry when I'm 30 and ofcourse the guy would be more than 30! argh! And for say if I get married during my studies shall I be able to continue it with full concentration? I highly doubt it..

Thanks for your reply..

Re: Need Help with my career?

The best advice for you is:

Please get married now and make babies.

Education weducation... you can always think about it when you're budhi.

Re: Need Help with my career?

^ You're kidding right??

Re: Need Help with my career?

if you really want to do something and have a career, eg med, forget about age. you can't concentrate on studies as well as the wish to get married. but if you do get married while studying there are tons of girls who are raising a family as well as studying. it isn't that hard, especially if you have a considerate husband.

if you want to be a psychiatrist, you have to have a med degree. if you just want to be a psychologist, you have to have a PhD in psychology. with an MA in psychology you can expect to get maybe a job as a counsellor. psychology is an amazing field, and i expect that in pakistan psychologists/psychiatrists will begin to be more common than they are right now.

if you just want to pass the time waiting to get married and working after wards isn't such a big concern to you, then you should look into another field, like physiotherapy or someting like that. i think AKU offers a program similar to that. not to say physio isn't a good career. but it's a shorter course work than med or psychologist.

Re: Need Help with my career?

Okay so I am not going to pass any judgements on your thinking there but move on to see what it means.

basically medicine ans psychiatry are not fit for you.

you are 20 now,
2 years for grade 12- you are 22
if u want to get married by the time you are 25-26
you need to find a program that is 3 years , max 4

so the question is, what do u like to do, which you can complete in 3 years after intermediate.

right now you have not noted anything about what types of things interest you. if u like healthcare field or counseling maybe there are other areas u can explore. why not psychology? why not surgical assistant, ultrasound technician.

finishing your education after marriage is not a big deal, it depends on you, and a supportive husband, but mostly yourself. My wife finished her undergrad a year after we got married, and then was busy in her career, and then finished her masters, while working fulltime and as a mother of two, and did it before turning 30. my sister did her residency while she was married and had 2 kids. so its possible, i know of many such cases.

Re: Need Help with my career?

studies are a necessity for life, when one has to work.

there can be no reason under the sun that should stop you from getting education to become more skilled and to have a broader mind.

choose a field that you have an aptitude for. get into it at a nice and accredited 4 years or professional training college/ university prog and finish that program successfully.

you will feel a real sense of achievement. and then you can be in a better position to think about other things in life.

best,
Dushwari

I'm sorry I may sound dumb but what's the difference between Psychiatry and Psychology?

To be honest, I don't want to just time pass nor do I want to study cos of job but I think good education gives you sha'oor and secondly and most importantly I want to serve Islam and my country.. I want to play a positive role for the betterment of people especially for women. But sometimes nafs and shaytan wants to put me in the trap of money and thats when I start thinking of medics in AKU! May Allah help me in making the right decision. Ameen.

That's very very nice to hear.. MashaAllah. Actually I was not supposing it in paki, maybe my experience is different. Well anyways so I think I should just start my studies without the fear of marriage and etc etc.. thanks for drilling hope in me..

Re: Need Help with my career?

PhD will take the most of your time :p

the main diff between a psychiatrist and a psychologist is that a psychiatrist can prescribe you medicine. a psychologist normally can't. they use other methods to treat the various psychological conditions, such as cognitive-behaviour techinques, stuff like that. and like i mentioned before, to be a psychiatrist u have to have you MBBS. it's just like any other specilization after the MBBS degree, like being pediatrician or an OB/GYN.

first you have to decide what you're interested in. if you're interested in the health field, then start from there. there are tons of options there, and you don't have to be stuck with getting a degree in medicine. don't think of medicine as just a money making field though. you can do great good in that field. but like i said there are other fields in health. someone else can probably list you a lot of them because i'm coming out blank right now :p there's also hospital adminstration, which is a business program but still in connection with the health field.

if you're not into health, look into other professional programs and degrees. business is a good option.

but first you have to decide what you're passionate about before picking a program that you will be devoting a lot of years of your life to.

Re: Need Help with my career?

Thanks sister..

Okey I think I should have been more specific before well now here goes a few options which I'm considering now, feel free to share your views.

Law and Psychology basically. (waiting for Khumar's reply)

Well if I choose Law what I have to take for 11 and 12th grade? Is it Arts or something else? And what are the good law schools preferably in Khi then whole country..

And same for Psychology are there some good institutes of it preferably in Khi then the whole PK. beside KU as I don't have my matriculation degree from Karachi board so its most likely impossible to get admission there.

Secondly what type of work I can do in Psycholgoy field?

Thanks everyone..

Re: Need Help with my career?

how are you planning to go to KU after matric?
u have to do your inter first
I did my inter in federal board and actually enrolled at KU
a cousin of mine had done his inter at fed board as well and went to IBA so that is not an issue

Re: Need Help with my career?

lol, I didnt mean that. But I want to set everything such as where would I be studying etc..Getting admission at any institute other than government ones isnt a problem. But I have heard that KU prefers students from Khi only? and ofcourse they are too much in number that hardly any seat has left for others..? wallaho a'alam

Off topic but how do you multi quote your message?

Re: Need Help with my career?

i'm biased, i love psychology :D the only trouble with it is that to get a good job, you have to go to the extra mile, that is either get your MBBS or get your phD. but still it's an amazing field. in either case, if you're a psychiatrist you can either have your own practice, or you can work in hospitals or clinics. with a phD same situation pretty much, but you can work with other fields too. law enforcement, schools, colleges. or you can be a professor if you wish.

i'm not too sure about law but from what i understand and someone can correct me, is that you have to have like an undergrad first, and then you can go into a law program. it can be arts. if you were in the british school system you do your a levels in the law and then get into the law schools. something like that.

Re: Need Help with my career?

So you can’t get a good job without PhD/MBBS degree? But well if I still want to go for it what are some good institutions for it other than gov universities?

And for law can I go to any law school straight after A levels? Means I don’t have to have a grad degree if I have A level’s? It will save my time then.. :hmmm:

Re: Need Help with my career?

unfortunately that's the case with psych. it's hard to find jobs with just a BSc or a MSc/MA in psychology. with an MBBS or PhD it's almost like you're guaranteed a job. Not sure about where you can study for it. I suppose anywhere where they teach you other stuff. You'll have to ask around.

As for the law that's what i was told. Again i could be wrong with that so again you might have to ask someone in pakistan since i'm not living there right now.

Re: Need Help with my career?

Okies.. thanks sister..

InshaAllah will ask other people around or maybe someone else from this forum can help me, too? :)

Re: Need Help with my career?

I think Psychology would be the best option for you. For Psychiatry, you need to have an MBBS degree. And after going through 5 years of tough drill, psychiatry probably, would not be the best option. But then again, most of the other medical fields are too hectic. You just don't get any time for your private life. Its glamorous from the outside, but once you're in it, its tough..I mean really really tough. Working 80+ hours a week is not my idea of spending life.
If you're 20 now,I suggest you do something like MBA or masters in Psychology, Mass communication or even some language.
