Need Help: Traveling

I will be traveling back to US to my family with a 15 months old toddler and 33weeks pregnant.. Hubby will be with us.. I am worried and scared of traveling being pregnant and with a toddler (a very moody toddler) I could have traveled early i.e 26-27 weeks but I will have to travel alone as he is busy in office in some projects.. I don’t want to travel alone.. I am in Saudia andflight to US is 18-20 hours..

I need tips how to manage this trip. Anyone else who have traveled in their 33rd week pregnancy please share your experience. And which airline is most comfortable? American or Eithad airline?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Need Help: Traveling

Make sure u have docs notes mentioning its safe for you to travel. Thats extremely important.
Keep toys for baby. Keep food. Snacks. Tylenol.

Re: Need Help: Traveling

I hope your hubby will take most of the responsibility for your toddler. Travelling is tough at the best of times. Let him do the bulk of the looking after and entertaining so you can take of things like nappy changes without getting exhausted. Also, is there a possibility of breaking up your journey to give you all a chance to rest? I recently went to Pak (also have a 15mo) and although the trip isn't nearly as long, I get really sick flying so we did a 8hr stopover in Dubai and got a room in the hotel which in in the airport. I could then rest and eat, little guy could run about and stretch his legs and I could get him changed and freshened up easily. I know lots of people would find this strange as the next flight is only a few hours but I know from experience that there is no way I can go from one flight to the next without becoming really unwell.

Re: Need Help: Traveling

get compression socks for your legs. Walk every couple of hours for blood circulation (make sure to speak to your doctor and ask them if its ok for you to travel.)
Pack unique and new toys for the toddler and let him play with each start to the end (unwrapping and everything.) pack his fav. books if any. Take tylenol for your self/hubby and the toddler. Give tylenol to the toddler 30 minutes before take off and landing. If he is a picky eater, pack his food with him (don't relay on the airline food.) I always keep him in a one piece night suit during flight time. With those you don't have to worry about shoes, socks and covering the baby.

Good lucK!

Re: Need Help: Traveling

What's the reason for giving tylenol?

Re: Need Help: Traveling

benadryl for toddlers and tylenol for mom...

Re: Need Help: Traveling

My pediatrician recommend it the very first time i took him (he was 7 months old,) for ear pressure and just to calm him down. AH i have traveled with him 5-6 times (on domestics and international flights) and never had any issues with him crying during the take off or landing.

Re: Need Help: Traveling

I have kept benadryl with me to give it to him, but AH never needed to use it. I am lucky in the sense that my son is really good at traveling with us. He is 4 1/2 and he has been to pakistan 4 time, Turkey, Canada and Seattle once each AH...and we have never had any issues. I also dont change his nap/sleeping schedule just before the flight, since kids get more cranky when sleepy and are unable to fall a sleep.

But OP situation is a little tougher since she is pregnant.

OP if you toddler takes a pacifier, make sure he uses it during take off and landing...it is suppose to reduce the ear pressure.

Re: Need Help: Traveling

Get a note from your doctor to say you are fit to travel and get advice from them.
Get compression socks and walk around to reduce risk of DVT as pregnant woman have a higher risk.

That's a pretty long flight, u will be exhausted.

I went to Pak when I was 28 weeks with my 10 month old and it was so exhausting and that journey isn't half as long.

Re: Need Help: Traveling

Are you sure the airline is okay with you flying so far along in your pregnancy? I thought there are some restrictions....

Re: Need Help: Traveling

She will need to produce doctor's written permission before boarding. 27 week is limit and after that air travel is discouraged.
