Hello everyone.I am the student of political science and i have been given the following assignment.
Senate members are elected for 6 years and each one has to fulfill the 6 years term but half of the members retire after 3 years so how does this half complete the 6 years term?and on what basis do they retire and the other half remain?why do half retire and half remain?
I searched on net alot but couldnt find any relevant info, the only relevant point i got was that they retire after a draw but whats the draw procedure?
Could anyone plzzzzzz give me a brief comprehensive answer???
Re: need help on senate elections procedure.................
I believe the draw was happened only to the first senate, now since senators been elected in the batches so everyone got to complete it full term.
Re: need help on senate elections procedure.................
thanks for ur reply tipu But could someone please elaborate it a bit more?????
Re: need help on senate elections procedure.................
In Pakistan, Senate election happens every 3 years when 50 senators (half the senate) get elected. Elected senators join 50 existing senators who got elected 3 years earlier. Those who get elected they stay senator for 6 years.
Example (true for Pakistan):
2009: Total senators 100 (before Senate election).
50 Senators lost their seats in 2009 (these senators were elected in 2003).
50 Senators were left in senate (these senators were those who got elected in 2006).
50 new senators got elected in 2009.
New elected senators (2009 batch) joined 50 senators who got elected in 2006, thus making total number of senators in senate =100.
2012: Total senators 100 (before senate election).
50 senators would lose their seats in 2012 (these senators were elected in 2006).
50 senators would be left in Senate (these senators got elected in 2009).
50 new senators would get elected in 2012
(These senators would replace senators who got elected in 2006 and thus lost their seats after 6 years in 2012).
New elected senators (2012 batch) would join 50 senators who got elected in 2009 ... making total =100 Senators.
Basically for 1st election 2003 a full senate was elected. After 3 years a draw was done and half retired so at any one time you have all senators with all completing 6 year terms

hmmmm but here one question arises in my mind and that is That since when is this system going?and When 50 senators get elected in elections so it means that in the beginning there were only 50 senators in senate as other 50 must have joined after 3 years.

Number of senators varied over the years. As far as I know, initially there were 45 senators but gradually their numbers were increased. Last time their number got increased was in 2002 when it was increased to 100 by Presidnet Mssharraf.
As for what happened when it was required that half the number of senators have to get replaced and less than half spent time as senators for 6 years than remaining senators who did not spent time as senators for 6 years but have to get replaced, were chosen using draw (as mentioned by Zakk and also from what I know). This draw happened whenever it was required to retire half the number of senators (replaced by new elected batch) and less than half were senators for 6 years.
Re: need help on senate elections procedure.................
Wait, must all 50 senators who's term is coming to an end necessarily leave the senate? I mean, can't they run for re-election and snag another 6 year term? Are there term limits to the senate? Also, is the Pakistani legislature Bicameral? Are there upper and lower houses like the US Congress? I know Pakistan is a federation of 4 provinces, how are the provincial governments set up? Do they follow a republican model like the federal government?
So many questions, lol.
