I hope you guys dont' mind if I ask here if margarine is halal.

Let's say you are going to buy a cake but when you read the ingredients they say there's margarine.

I just know margarine has two types one of plant and one of animal. BUT hardly ever do they mention what type of margarine the put.

Anyone?

Good to know there are still some muslims out there who take this very basic thing seriousely.
:k:

Aside from the usual garbage responses “I just dont eat pork” or “bismillah kar ke sab kuch halal ho jaata hai”. Another popular one “we have other more important things to worry about” as though they are running a marathon for islam or something.

Assalam O Alaikum

According to our web site www.muslimconsumergroup.com New Food Products section, all Alatoids and Mentos products are not Halal. Here are the reasons. Cinnamon, Peppermint and winter green flavors of Altoids are made with gelatin, Natural flavor and colors which are not Halal. Only Fish gelatin and gelatin obtained from Zabiha cows are Halal. In order for natural and artificial flavors to be Halal they should be made from Halal raw materials and chemicals and should not contain alcohol (hidden ingredient) as a solvent in the flavors. They should be under Halal or Kosher certification. FD&C colors such as yellow no.5 or red 40 or artificial color are chemical dyes and Halal if they used as is in powder or granular forms but these forms are not soluble in liquid ingredients, so glycerin from pork or cow or vegetable fat or vegetable oil is added as solvents in a liquid forms to be mix with liquid ingredients. If these artificial colors are Halal or kosher certified it means that only the vegetable fat glycerin or vegetable oil was used as solvent or carrier in its liquid forms otherwise pork fat glycerin could have been used. Altoids are made in UK without Halal or Kosher supervision or no mention of "Suitable for Vegetarian". Altoids Strips are made with ethyl alcohol which is a Haram ingredient. Alcohol is mentioned under the ingredients statement.

Mentos are made in Brazil and they use Non Halal or Kosher certified emulsifiers, natural flavors and colors. No Halal or Kosher symbol is seen on the package. It is possible that these emulsifiers may be from pork fat.

We also bring the fact that some Ulema do not recommend a food product to be consume if alcohol was used in natural or artificial flavor as a solvent and some ulema allowed to consume those food products made from alcohol containing natural & artificial flavor and all other ingredients are Halal because they said that the alcohol is in minute amount and it does not intoxicate a person. But they will not assign a Halal status to food product if alcohol was used as a solvent in flavors. We leave it to Muslim to contact their Islamic scholar about it.

Margarine may contain gelatin or emulsifiers from animal fat. But majority of Margarine are Kosher certified but they contain artificial flavor to provide buttery flavor. This artificial flavor may or may not contain alcohol (hiden ingredient) as a solvent.

Canola Harvest is the only Margarine in which no alcohol was used in the artificial flavor according to the company. Fleischmann, Imperial, Country Crock, Benecol, Blue Bonnet, Parkway, I cant believe its no butter's 70% vegetable oil spread, Promise's Buttery Light, Butter Margarine are Halal if no alcohol is used in artificial. You have to find out from the manufacturer. All above Margarine have a Kosher symbol on the package.

Promise Ultra Fat free, 40% vegetable oil spread, Brummel & Brown spread with Yogurt and I cant believe its not butter's light 37% oil spreads are not Halal margarines and do not have kosher symbol on the package.

for Halal Margarine in cakes you have to look for Kosher symbol such as
Sara Lee frozen cakes are Halal containing margarine if no alcohol is used in margarine flavor and other flavors. But Sara Lee Home style Apple and Cherry pie and Eli's original cheesecake are Halal becuase they do not contain flavor and has a kosher symbol.

One important thing that not all Kosher certified food products are Halal, only those who meet the Islamic dietary requirements are considered Halal. We have list of ingredients on our web site which makes a kosher certified food product not Halal because those ingredients are considered Haram such as wine, alcohol, L-cysteine from human hair, naturally brewed soy sauce containing 2% alcohol, kosher gelatin.

Our organization Muslim Consumer Group for Food Products is running adverisement in Chicago's Urdu newspapers for Muslims to log on our web site so that they can bring Halal food products from supermarkerts to their homes and masjid because according a Hadith Prophet Mohammed Sallallahu Alaihi wa sallum said that Allah will not accept the Duwa for forty days if someone eat a bit of Haram food.

I am also writing a Halal food book " A Comprehensive List of Halal food products in US supermarkets" since last 13 years which includes a list of Halal food products in 33 supermarkets coast to coast.

So there is lot information available for Muslims to eat only Halal food products. We are also educating Muslims about food ingredients and Halal/Haram status beside food products, hidden ingredients, Halal and kosher certification and meaning for different kosher symbols beside information on toothpaste, bar soaps, shampoo, laundry detergen, fast food chains, cough medicine and pain reliever tablets.

^ wow thanks for the info.

Well, regarding Mentos the one I saw was made in Indonesia with a Halal label.

I have been wondering about chewing gums. Long ago, my Dad said "Wrigley" ones are haram because they have animal contents. (which aren't mentioned in the ingredients) He read a fax from them in reply to a query by another person with regard to this.

I have told my little siblings not to eat chewing gums. Be it Airwaves, Extra.

But sometimes it's hard for them coz they always say "everyone(other muslims) are eating it. :( Why can't we? it's not haram etc etc. :( "

What to do.....

We have mentioned on our web site www.muslimconsumergroup.com under News/Alert section that there is no animal derived ingredients and no alcohol in flavors in all Wrigley chewing gums except Polar Bear chewing gum which is made with gelatin according to Wrigley.

  • wat about e numbers like E471 we have been told this e additive contains fat from pig's bones????? so since 1994 we have been avoiding all foods which contain e471 and gelatine / lard etc in their respective ingredients *

p.s " i want more info' on E471 i'm aware of gelatine and lard being haram ingredients

Assalam O Alaikum

E-Number 471 is a Mono-and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids. This fat based emulsifier can be made from either pork fat or Non-Zabiha beef fat or Zabiha beef fat or from soybean fat. If it is made from Soybean fat or Zabiha beef fat then it becomes Halal ingredient but if it is made from pork fat then it becomes Haram and some Ulema also considered it Haram if it is made from Non Zabiha beef fat. It is not necessory that it is always made from pork fat.

There are three way to find out its source:

  1. If there is Halal or Kosher symbol appear on the package of a food product containing E-Number 471 under the ingredients list. It means that it is made from soybean fat.

  2. If there is a statement " Suitable for vegetarian" appear on the package of a food product containing E-Number 471 in the ingredients list. Again it means that the E-Number 471 is made from soybean fat.

  3. Inquiry with manufacturer of the food product about source of E-Number 471.

You have to make sure that the other ingredients in the product are from Halal sources.

We have do not have E-Number syetem in USA, the 4th way is the word "Vegetable" appear before Mono-and Diglycerides like Vegetable Mono-and Diglycerides.

It is very good thing that you are avoiding the doubtful food products since long time. You have a very good Taqwa. Every Muslim has to do the same thing if some one is not sure about its Halal status.
