I have a banarsi sari in orange with purple undertones and accents. It has a very wide border in gold. (I will try to post a pic later so you can get a feel for it.)
Since this sari will never be worn as it is I would like to cut it up and make a pishwas or something for my daughter Noor. She is 6, slim and tall and looks good in pretty much anything that I put her in from gharara to chooridar to shalwar.
I would like to see what you guys can come up with for suggestions and designs.
***So keeping in mind she is tall and the saree has a wide gold border these are a few designs that come to mind…I’d probably go with one of these cuts…I think the Kareena -Karishma outfits would really suit your girl !
I know!!!
I am so, so, so thankful to Allah for giving me a daughter!!!!!
Ibrahim and I were talking about adoption and we still want another daughter.....
Thank you sheyn....I like the wide borders on the bottom of those frocks.....plus at 6 years old the child loves to twirl around and watch her dress float out under her so the gathers will work well.
Hmm....I really like the idea of mixing chiffon into it....especially if I do chooridaar sleeves.
The banarsi is silkier so it is not thick on the orange/purple one....but I have some leftover part of another red/gold sari that is poth and it has a thicker border....I can add red chiffon to that........
Muzna, buy jamavar in the same purple and make a bodice out of it. Attach the banarsi (orange) to it and make a long kameez with lots of pleats. U can embellish the midriff area with pretty swarovski's and dabka. Pair it with a tight churidar and a flowy chiffon dupatta with sprinkles of kaam.

This is eactly what I went looking for but I couldn't find the right colour jamavar or even brocade. I may decide to simply take the paloo of the sari and use that to make a bodice. Perhaps do the kaam on the bodice with purple beads, crystals and gota cuz that's so in.....but I'll still give it another week of searching for the correct fabric.
Keep in mind that I am in Toronto/Mississauga so my choices are a bit limited as compared to what I would have had access to in Pakistan.
Whatever kaam I choose to do will be whatever I can do myself.....
This will be an interesting project. I will try to post the step by step status here in pics.
The pallu would work well Muzna, do 'gota' on the gala and bodice..and make it 'churi' wali sleeves too.. they look really nice with a churidaar.. if u don't find a nice jamavar for the bodice..u can turn the sari into an angharka..and have work on the gala/slit..
Yes Sara it is hard.....and if you are spending $100+ on one outfit it really hurts cuz she wears it only once or twice and then she has grown out of it.
What I have been doing is buying them a couple of sizes larger and altering them down a size if she really wants to wear it right away. Then I put them away for a year or two and pull them out again when they actually fit her. It's tough to manage if you don't have storage space but for the really extravagant outfits it's worth it.
And this is also why I tend to sew a lot of her outfits myself. It costs less and I have the ability to choose the colours and type of work that I want.
Gina, I had already planned chooridaar sleeves cuz the peshwas she wore on Eid did NOT have them and I kep wanting to alter it.
she's 6!! why would you want to dress her in banarsi when there are so many other fun fabrics out there for young children - use chiffons, tissues, grips, georgettes even raw silk!!! but banarsi??? its just such a mature fabric for a 6 year old - and if you love the sari that much then you should wait till she's older and then make her something - if you're dying to use it then i think you should do chiffoon and perhaps use the banarsi at the belt area as a piping and as a border at the bottom and thats it!
Thank you fashionguru for your input and for joining our board.
I have used many other fabrics including some of the ones that you have mentioned. And I will continue to do so in the future. The banarasi that I am using is going to be very minimal....just the bodice and the border on the hem.....that's it. The lion share of the outfit will be made from georgette or chiffon to give it the airy feel that it needs.
I meant to post a pic over the weekend but didn't get a chance. I will try to do it tonight iA.
