Hey guys,
I want to move to the suburbs and wanted suggestions on areas in Long Island. I will be commuting via LIRR and want to remain in Nassau to due to the commute. I don’t want to live near the water…so a central location is important.
Thanks.

Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
Yes, its better to be in Nassau if you have to commute to city a lot. Now, its a island so you'll be near the water anywaz. Following are the best places that I'd recommend in the order from top keeping the vicinity to city in mind:
1) New Hyde Park (or Manhassett which is jut next to it)
2) Hempstead (either east or west)
3) Garden city
4) Westbury
5) Bethpage
New Hyde park is one of the best areas in western nassau. Very expensive though! Hempstead/Garden city/westbury are all nearby each other.Bethpage is further going towards suffolk but its just next to hicksville which is more desi-populated area.
Now I really dont know your preference but the above areas do have best schools which's why most ppl prefer to live in suburbs. Also remember that living in LI by itself is a costly deal. So be prepared for heavy taxes.
HTH. Good luck! :)
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
Thanks SID. I did a quick scan of houses in Bethpage and most of them seem to be within my budget of 400K. I would like my taxes to be under 10K though. A masjid within a reasonable drive is also a plus for me.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
Yes Bethpage has a very good masjid, "al-baqi". Westbury has the best one in LI though but its a big area.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
I personally like Westbury too, good schools and close to everything. Other areas that were posted are pretty desirable as well. Look out for my PM with some contacts.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
I am renting but just today we signed a new lease, new area, new apartment. I can write my story if anyone is interested :D. It was a long 6 month hunt.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
^ BOooo no more in queens? :(
I never searched in LI but it seems like looking for an apartment is just as challenging as finding a job!
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
No no I am still in Queens. Suburbs.. Bayside. I fell in love with this place when I saw it. I looked at soooooooo many different places and I picked this area. Apparently its one of the most expensive area in Queens also one of the safest in NYC. I am not a fan of LIRR but oh well.. We do have a car.. just one
. I like LI but I am not crazy about it. I want to stay in NYC … suburbs work fine.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
I agree with you…Bayside is quite nice. I’ve been renting for a long time, but now with the little one, I want to have a backyard. I looked in Rockland, Westchester & as far away as Orange…but the reason I like LI is due to the many masajid and indo/pak grocery stores. I do not like the LIE…but I’ve made that compromise.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
Oh yeah .. kid.. that's my reason for moving to a bigger, better place too. We don't plan to live in NY for good so renting works for us but as long as we are here I want to enjoy NYC life. There is a good Pakistani community in Westchester too. I like New Hyder Park area too but our reason for picking bayside (we were fine with whitestone too) was because of LIE, Van Wyck, Cross Island Parkway, Grand Central, Clearview Expy etc. Yeah no Belt Parkway but we hardly ever go to that area. My husband has to do a lot of travelling due to work and this was the best option for us.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
I am about to move from my apt in New Hyde Park. It is a lovely neighborhood - excellent location due to close proximity to NYC. When do you need to move?
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
Is it expensive in Bayside? I spent a few hours there this past weekend and it looked very nice.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
Umm.. I'm not sure which bayside are you talking about?! Like there is manhasett bay, bayville or oyester bay .. But as I said earlier, the whole LI is expensive with more taxes esp if you live in more white ppl area.

I was referring to the Bayside in Queens. I agree that some areas in LI is expensive but taxes are a way of life (unfortunately). But there are good solid areas with reasonable taxes.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
Not insanely expensive. We got a nice house .. second floor... 3 bedroom.. fully renovated for 1900. Oh and 2 bath. Its not that expensive. No parking issues.. we have our own drive way so I don't have to pay for parking like I was before. Now the only issue is, its only me hubz and our 6 month old baby and 3 rooms.. lol. Its a big house I think for our family but oh well.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
Thanks for the info Spiral.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
Np. I am sure if you are renting, you can get a better price. My husband is just not bargaining kind so the landlord settled for the first offer we gave her. Buying a house here ... I am not sure .. I think they are very pricy.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
I'm looking to purchase.......but if I can't find something soon, I will definately consider the area. It has great schools too (I also have a little one). Thanks again.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
The prices have actually come down quite a bit in Long Island. As was mentioned, the taxes are a way of life so can't keep complaining about that. Ofcourse if you start comparing real-estate prices here to those in Texas or Florida then it would make you swoon.
Re: Need advice on moving to Long Island
wow…that’s a pretty good price methinks..
and dont’ worry, eventually those 3 rooms will start feeling too small ![]()
