Im a medical student from the UK who is going to new York on a 4 week elective to Mount sinai school of medicine. I have a choice of 7 hospitals to work at, some of the hospitals are in new jersey. I have never been to New York before and would like some advice about stuff like where i could get decent accomodation ( any pakis on gs renting out flats?), mosques nearby etc.
Also which city would you guys say is better to live in, New jersey or new York?. I will put up a list of the places where i might get sent to but hopefully i will get a good response from this first post before i do that.

Any help/advice would be really appreciated.
Hmmm, goin to New York eh....
Well avoid Queens and the Bronx at all costs
Try to get a hospital in Manhattan or Brooklyn. They dont have any on Staten Island. Jersey is ok, but go for Manhattan or Brooklyn
Re: Need advice/help from pakis in New York/new Jersey
Well my sister is doing her residency at Elmhurst Medical Center in Queens and she lives like 10 mins from the hospital. I think it depends on your budget and what sort of commute time is convinient for you. She have friends who communte everyday from NewJersey to the same hospital, they are probably paying $700-800 for a 1 bedroom apartment but are spending some 3-4 hours in commuting whereas she is paying $1000 for a 1 bedroom but her commute time is mostly 10-20 mins.
Re: Need advice/help from pakis in New York/new Jersey
Congrats… im not sure which hospital are the best but people generally tend to go to the Jewish ones. Mount Sinai would be one.
New York is far more exciting then New Jersey… I would choose New York in a heart beat, but it is a little more expensive. Brooklyn has a large Pakistani community and you would feel at home… I say head to Brooklyn.
Re: Need advice/help from pakis in New York/new Jersey
when do you arrive in NY/NJ?
i let out my apartment in nov for 4 months.. i'll pm u the website where i listed it. hopefully u'll find something there.
Re: Need advice/help from pakis in New York/new Jersey
There is a hospital on staten island called St VIncents. I have heard good things about it but I dont know about living arrangements there.
There are some lovely neighborhoods in Queens, good hospitals too. Nice towns are Forest Hills and Kew gardens. Living in Queens is an easy commute to NYC.
There are many great hospitals in NYC but living in the city itself is wildly expensive. Better to commute from a more affordable location.
If you're looking for a desi neighborhood, there are a few in Queens, more in Brooklyn or the bronx. I'm not so familiar with these areas though.
There is a huge mosque in Upper Manhattan, around 95th street.
Re: Need advice/help from pakis in New York/new Jersey
the best place 2 look for accomodation, is with the hospitals themself-ususally they have fairly good hosp accomodation-which they r able 2 rent out 2 elective students. Email all 7 of ur choices, and then the one where u can get some cheap hospital accom-go for tht 1!
Re: Need advice/help from pakis in New York/new Jersey
as mama said, forest hills, kew gardens, rego park are nice neighborhoods in queens that are also close to train stations. in bklyn, bay ridge and sheepshead bay, kings highway is also ok, i think.
one of my friends was with mt sinai, and the hospital got her a nice (but awfully tiny) apt in the city, close to the hospital, and she paid something like 1100 a month. that was a subsidized rate that the hospital was able to get for her.
Re: Need advice/help from pakis in New York/new Jersey
welcome to GS & NY.
NJ sub urb will be cheaper if u share with other students like any where.
water front area in nj gets to be posh and thus pricey.
u might be better off living on upper west side of manhattan, to be near Mt sinai.
u might definitely also find places to live in, in queens and brooklyn, NY.
avoid areas that are not inhabitated by coll students.
there are many mosques in brooklyn and on 96th street in Manhattan.
on lex and 29th, Pakistani and hala food shops are also plenty.
good luck with ur electives.
dushi

Re: Need advice/help from pakis in New York/new Jersey
The hospitals that i will have to choose between are
Queens Hospital Center, A-9N53
Elmhurst Hospital Center, D6-20
St. Barnabas Medical Center, Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ
Mount Sinai Hospital, 5 E. 98 St., 15th floor
I would prefer a hospital in a paki area because then its easy to get halal food etc. I think i would probably put Queens at the top of my list going by what everyone is saying but i dont know where elmhurst is.
As for accomodation the hospital are charging $900 per month but that price doesnt even include pillows and blankets, plus i dont even know if i will get a room yet as i still have to apply for it.
Re: Need advice/help from pakis in New York/new Jersey
Elmhurst is in queens, its also a convenient area, only 2-4 stops away from Jacksno heights (with halal restaurants/grocery stores)
900 is normal in queens and the outer boroughs, i dn tthink u can get anything for 900 in manhattan..
Re: Need advice/help from pakis in New York/new Jersey
Kazi, if i dont get the visa for the US then im going to go to manchester for my elective so keep a room spare for me......lol. People on gupshup are so kind.....
Re: Need advice/help from pakis in New York/new Jersey
Have you checked with the hospitals themselves? Some hospitals provide accomodations for students/staff at very cheap rates, though it may not be the most upto par type housing. However, you're here only for a month, you need a place to crash and something that's conveniently located.
-Elhmhurst is very close to Jackson Heights - the desi hub of NY
-Queens Hospital is obviously in Queens and there's always desi food/halal food available
-Mount Sainai is in the city and thats where the life is! So take your pick.
Re: Need advice/help from pakis in New York/new Jersey
Move to Queens and i'll give you my company over the weekend...totally free. Will have dinner @ kabab king or some Afghani cusine. Elmuhurst hospital pretty much South American communities near by but lots of desis too.
