if she overeacts about everything and you want to keep good relations with her then just say yes to everything she says. try not to talk too much, she is an elder and it's would be hard for her to change her ways, it's like a 10% chance of her realizing she needs to change a bit too so you have to be the more mature one and try to adjust to her ways. maybe the overreacting is a way of her seeking attention that she desperately wants, try doing things her way once in a while and see how she reacts, i'm not saying you should be a dust rag and do everything her way but she might be flattered if you did something like that and might grow closer to you.

with elders it's best not to talk too much, we are younger and less experienced

This is a dangerous move! .. If her MIL caughts her doing phoonke on water or food, she might think the bahu is doing jadoo on her. Jadoo etc. is very "popular" among pakistanis nowadays and I have noticed whenever someone experience something they are quick to label it as "usne mujh pe jadoo kiya hai" etc. So really be careful. I know you mean it will DD, but I'm just pointing out the backlash of it, which I've seen quite so often nowadays

whatever she says, just say "thek hai maa jee" and dont talk alot...ignore the negatives and take the positive...
