Re: Need a Lahore style Channa chaat recipe

I need this too

Re: Need a Lahore style Channa chaat recipe

how do you make it?

My husband is from Islamabad and this is how he likes it (I layer all these things instead of mixing them):

Channay
Boiled potatoes
Whipped yogurt with salt and pepper (to taste)
Sprinkle with chopped tomatoes and onions
Sprinkle with chaat masala
Drizzle imli chutney over it
Sprinkle broken papri/namak para on top

I keep the green chutney and extra chaat masala on the side so if he wants to put it on the chaat he can.

Re: Need a Lahore style Channa chaat recipe

First of all there is no papri ever on authentic chana chaat that you get in Lahore.
Second I don’t know but it never taste the same as what you get in Liberty market or from thalay walla no matter if you use exact recipe.
I can list the ingredients that are in channa chat.

Chickpeas.
Boiled potatoes cut in cubes
Oinion finely choped
Tomatos finely chopped
Green chillies finely chopped
fresh lemon juice
Thin beaten yougret
chaat masala and salt to taste
Imili pain and cilantro if you wish.
And thats it!

Re: Need a Lahore style Channa chaat recipe

^ditto. We make ours the same way but we also add laal mirch.

This is my style to make channa chaat: boiled channa, some canned kidney beans, boiled potatoes in cubes, tomato/ green chillie/ hara dhaniya/ some mint leaves finely choppped, thinly sliced onion (put a lots of salt and some water to the onion slices. After ten minutes wash them well to take the salt out. The onion slices will be soft and tasty). Add some salt, crushed chilli, lemon syrup and white vinegar. Everyone loves to eat my channa chaat...

Re: Need a Lahore style Channa chaat recipe

hmmm so I make it wrong then :hmmm:

usually I heat a pot with a teaspoon oil , add in chopped onions, ginger and green chillies and let it sit for no more then a minute , then add boiled channas and potatoes .. fry it all until it turns brown and finally add the chat masala , salt, lemon juice, fresh corriander , chopped tomatos ..

I think i miss out on the imli bit that might change the taste all together .. so tonight when i make it i am gonna add imli to it .. lets see what husband says .. I tell you its really difficult keeping foodie lahories happy :hula:

Re: Need a Lahore style Channa chaat recipe

It's true what bebo said though - no matter what you do, you can't get that freakin taste. =(

Re: Need a Lahore style Channa chaat recipe

The channa Chat I make is not much different but a bit more things i add.
Boiled Channas
Boiled potatoes
I add home made masala that i made by roasting whole red chillies, whole coriander and whole cumin and then chop it in blender so I add that around 1.5 tsp
Coriander leaves, green chillies and mint leaves chopp them in blender to make a paste and add 2 tbsp
Imlee soaked in water and then add the imlee ka ras u get from it
Chaat masala
Onion chopped neatly
Tomato chopped thin

In the imlee water add salt, chat masala, the home made masala and the green mixture blended and then add channa and potatoes and then onion and tomatoes. Here u go. To ake it crunchy you can put the pappri. If you like sweet taste add some tomatoe ketchup

Re: Need a Lahore style Channa chaat recipe

The authentic chana chaat you get in Lahore does not have yogurt, paapri or tomato ketchup in it unless you ask for it. Normally it only has chana, boiled potatoes, red onions, tomatoes, green chillies, lemon, and turmeric water and chana chaat masala, thats it!

Btw CB, Lahori chaat is supposed to be cold and made with boiled chickpeas and potatoes, not hot or cooked with masalas.

Re: Need a Lahore style Channa chaat recipe

I make mines like this with imli water but minus the kidney beans and vinegar.

Re: Need a Lahore style Channa chaat recipe

Thanks for letting me know Miss F .. Actually hubby did say that its served chilled , so I used to keep it in the fridge for a while before serving ... recently i made it again with the above mentioned recipes and this time its better yet not that specific taste ...
