I have no career plans, nothing. I am willing to take (almost) any job, but have the worst luck.
If I dont get a job by January, I will apply for a PhD.
Any advice on where to look for work? Any job opportunities you know about?
Career tests?

Re: Need a career!
What kind of Master's you have ? Any kind of skills or talent ? Any previous job experience ? Where are you at for now ?
Re: Need a career!
yeah i think it will be very benifical if u we know wats ur field is lol wat masters do u have and wat country u r living in and wats ur educational background.
Re: Need a career!
LBG i would advise against going for a phd if you dotn knwo what u want to do, I think we had the sam conversation before you started your masters unless I am thinking of something else.
You must hve soe interests, and things that u are good at, hopefully there is an overlap there and thatswhat you should pursue.
Re: Need a career!
Hey,
I did my MA in International Relations. I expect my grades soon, I am confident of hitting it out of the ballpark. I may end up with an MA with Merit. My BA in is History. I feel, if my MA grade is as expected, I may be able to land funding.
I have some work experience. I was a sales leader, later manager, at a small phones/telecoms store in my hometown. This was between my 2 stints at university. I have the basic liberal arts skills (communication in written/oral format, data analysis...) I have some volunteer work in a high school. (Despite my GS persona, I'm quite a nice bloke).
In terms of interests, I enjoy sports and film. I have a big interest in IR etc. I wouldnt mind working in journalism/publishing. Editorial assistant, researcher that jazz. But finding such vacancies in hard.

so what is it that you want to do?

i did answer that.
the sentence you started the thread with threw me off..
I have no career plans, nothing.
that usually means u dont know what you want.
now it seems like you know what you want but are having a hard time getting a foot in the door.
This is not unusual given the economic climate right now, plus you dont have experience in international relations or journalism.
i cant say anything aboutr journalism, except try for things where you may get in easier, desi media perhaps? but for IR, try a few things, govt jobs like home office rather than think tank type stuff..secondly try large NGOs and charity type groups oxfam, redcross.
believe me one relevant role and 3 years experience and things will ease up considerably.
go to a career counselor at the university you attended or wish to attend. they are great resources in getting you focussed. send your resume and ask for an appointment.
Re: Need a career!
Maybe your resume isn't anygood. might want to take it your college career ctr and have it reworked. also work on interview skills, if you are in the states, its a tough job market!hang in there.
Re: Need a career!
Am UK based.
I was talking to a friend today. Maybe doing a PG Dip Economics leading in time to an MSc Economics. Then I'd have 2 MA's. :)
Re: Need a career!
why dont you apply for graduate jobs in the area you would like to work? i am sure you can get into as trainee and will be a good start for you. by end of 2nd MA things will not change much, you will still be considered a fresh graduate who has an MA.
I dont think 2 masters count that much unless its a PhD. i am saying this cause I have done two MSc. and I dont think they have helped much, I am considerd a person who has done masters, thats it.
Re: Need a career!
^^
Thanks for the insight.
Re: Need a career!
I would advise apply for any and every job you are interested in and then work your way up.
That is how got my first break in the job market. Once you have any kind of job in hand it enhances your marketability.
If for example you are flipping burgers and the interviewer at your next job interview asks why do you want to switch job . You can provide and very good explanation and provide a proof of your good communications skills. Even in your cover letter and in your resume you can provide some creative explanation for your reasons to still looking for a job , although you have one in hand already.
