Nawaz visits ISI HQ, briefed on security situation

SLAMABAD: Prime Minster Nawaz Sharif was briefed on the overall security situation in Pakistan during a four-hour long visit to the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) headquarters on Thursday, DawnNews reported.

This was Sharif’s first visit to the country’s leading spy agency after assuming the office of prime minister. He was accompanied by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali khan and Punjab Chief Minster Shahbaz Sharif.

Director General ISI Lt-Gen Zaheerul Islam briefed the government delegation on security and counter-terrorism strategy of the agency.

The prime minister was also briefed separately in private.

I will be forever indebted to anyone who could explain to me exactly what ISI is doing since the beginning of this millennium? Be it cross-border attacks from Afghan groups or Abottabad operation by the US, the so-called spy agency does not seem to be playing any role whatsoever.

Turn to the internal security situation and one gets only more disappointed by the performance of this organisation. Be it storming of GHQ, destruction of Orion aircraft at the Mehran base or Kamra Complex raids, the ISI appeared to be only as informed of the developments as a fruit vendor in a remote city somewhere in the country.

If criminal negligence could be a legal reason to put a state organ in the dock, ISI should have been abolished long ago.
