Nawaz Sharif announces to pursue peace talks

A vague kind of road map given by the Prime minister, and a weak team announced to negotiate with the terrorists.

Re: Pakistan 'on war footing to smash Taliban'

Its good that Imran Khan had announced his support for any operation the army would have gone for. As the dialog offer by the PM has now exposed PMLN. Previously they were using Imran Khan's shoulders and chanting that there's no consensus for operations.

Anyways the team that has been announced for the talks include Irfan Siddiqui, Raheemullah Yousafzai, Major Aamir and Rustam Shah Mohmand.

Re: Nawaz Sharif announces negotiations with taleban

some information about Major Aamir (maybe PPP’s man in the team). :stuck_out_tongue:

Was Midnight Jackal offered IB chief

**ISLAMABAD: One of the characters of the midnight jackals cast, Maj (retd) Amir has claimed that President Zardari had offered him the highly sensitive job of chief of the civilian-controlled Intelligence Bureau only a few weeks back.

“This offer was conveyed to me through the close presidential aide and confidant, an important member of the presidential media cell, Dr Qayyum Soomro,” the retired major claimed while talking to The News a few days back. But on Monday, he changed his statement and again told this correspondent that the offer had been made through another person “who is our mutual friend (of President Asif Zardari and Amir).”

President Zardari’s close aide Dr Qayyum Soomro also visited Major Amir last Sunday night and remained with the key player of Midnight Jackal for several hours. The retired major confirmed his meeting with Dr Qayyum Soomro in the last two days at his home at an Iftar-dinner. He said he had close ties with Dr Soomro since 2002 and they had been friends.

“Meeting friends should not be scandalised as even right now I am sitting with a PPP leader,” Major Amir told The News at around midnight Monday. He told The News only two days back that President Zardari had conveyed him a message to become the IB chief through Dr Soomro.

However, on Monday night in the wake of a number of questions regarding Dr Soomro, Major Amir changed his statement saying that the message was not conveyed by Dr Soomro but it was conveyed by another person.

Dr Soomro was not available for comments despite repeated calls on his phone numbers on Monday and Tuesday. Spokesman of the Presidency Farhatullah Babar, however, expressed his ignorance on Tuesday night about any such offer to Major Amir.

Talking to The News he said that any offer to Major Amir to become the IB chief by the presidency was not in his knowledge. “And I don’t think so that the president would have offered him to become the IB chief because the IB chief is always appointed by the prime minister,” Babar added.

On the questions of frequent meetings of certain PPP leaders, especially important aide of the president, Dr Qayyum Soomro, with Major Amir at a time when he (major) was preparing to make major public statements in a few days, Babar again said he was not in the knowledge of any such meetings.

“I never see Major Amir in the presidency, if he has such close relations with the presidency I should have seen him here,” Babar responded. On the question of allegations that the presidency was behind the campaign of Brigadier Imtiaz and it might launch Major Amir soon, Babar again denied any role of PPP leaders behind these Midnight Jackals, saying that he even didn’t consider it appropriate to discuss reports or stories about such disgruntled elements.

When Amir was asked by The News whether Brigadier Imtiaz was working for President Zardari and the PPP, he insisted that he had no knowledge about this but admitted that the vilification campaign by Brigadier Imtiaz had harmed Pakistan and the PML-N while it had worked in favour of the PPP and the MQM.

Major Amir admitted that he came close to Asif Ali Zardari in 2002 when he himself was in jail. He later wrote an article in favour of Zardari and their relations became very cordial. When Asif Ali Zardari got out of the jail, they remained in contact on phone.

Major Amir told The News that his role in Operation Midnight Jackal was wrongly presented in the media and very soon he would address a press conference to correct the record. He said after this press conference, he would also tell the media about the events that took place during his career.

Major Amir also confirmed his close but very old ties with a real estate business tycoon but insisted that he had neither indulged in any political wheeling and dealing in the past nor was he doing it now.

On the question of a luxurious 600 square yards plot in Sector I-8 of Islamabad given to him by the present PPP government, Major Amir said that he got this plot, as it was his right as he had served in the FIA in the 90s.

Amir got this plot from the PPP government for the quota reserved for “People facing extreme Hardship”. It is worth mentioning here that Major Amir, who got this plot on extreme hardship quota, resides in sector F-8 of Islamabad, one of the most posh neighborhoods of the capital.

Yeh kabhe kuch kehta hai kabhe kuch

Re: Nawaz Sharif announces negotiations with taleban

lolz funny one team member was saying k mujhe tu abhi media se pata chala hai k I am included, dosra kehta hai subah PM sahib ne mujhe bolo ha mei ne mana kya but PM sahib ne kaha meri khatir.............. this is very non serious attitude

Re: Nawaz Sharif announces negotiations with taleban

Couldnt agree more. A negotiating team from the govt should have 2 types of members. 1)govt reps who are senior enough to be able to make and receive commitments on behalf of the govt on the spot, and 2)mediators, who have links to both sides, eg, Maulana Samiul Haq, or some journalist like Saleem Safi.
In the absence of decision makers, this team becomes more of a messenger, rather than negotiator.

Re: Nawaz Sharif announces negotiations with taleban

Even majority of PML (N) legislators yesterday asked for army action against talibans - looks like as usual after mammoth morning nihari session he forgot everything!

Re: Nawaz Sharif announces negotiations with taleban

The team seems decide by army not civilians or both!

Re: Nawaz Sharif announces negotiations with taleban

That's it?

The amount of meetings he recently had with The COAS and with an ongoing operation in Wazristan, you'd think he'd would declare operation, but I guess you don't ask the Dodo.

So who's "supporting terrorism" this time, the Army Chief or Nawas Sharif? (Yeah I know this whole debate is getting so boring, but just for a laugh)

Well, you cannot accuse NS of being a visionary leader. These talks will come to nothing & terrorists will continues to slaughter people as they have before.

They welcome this effort and accept responsibility of attack on rangers in Karachi.

Re: Nawaz Sharif announces negotiations with taleban

I am still not convinced that the army wants an operation in NWA. Why should they let go of the opportunity for which they have given so many sacrifices? The politicians can easily call the bluff by asking the army to clear NWA. At the moment they are using the shoulders of politicians (national consensus) to further their goals.

Re: Nawaz Sharif announces negotiations with taleban

CBM's that TTP know of.

I can't recall...please tell me...
With every mazaq-raat effort did our govt. put any condition of no violence before talks?

Who is wearing pants in this relationship?

Re: Nawaz Sharif announces negotiations with taleban

no precondition from the army, where as ttp had put forward some conditions previously.

Re: Nawaz Sharif announces negotiations with taleban

None is wearing pants... one is bent over though :D

Re: Nawaz Sharif announces negotiations with taleban

Politicans on one side, it's hard to imagine army is going into these negotiations without any preconditions and subsequent conditions. Just because they don't release press statements like TTP, doesn't mean nothing is happening in their camp. But who knows, maybe I'm giving them a benefit of doubt.

Re: Pakistan 'on war footing to smash Taliban'

Yes i was happy to hear that Imran Khan did support of any military operation against taliban. But again as i understand, everyone wants to give peace a chance through negotiation. But my personal opinion on this negotiation is that...nothing will be accomplished.
