Nawab Akbar Bugti Killed (MERGED)

Re: Tribesmen disallow Bugti’s funeral prayers in Dera Bugti

They will when the senseless rioting eases.

Re: baloch burned Pakistani flag

Dont go over board here… With all due respect, Pak Army isnt as bad as you claim. There are many good Army jawans, and they have fought for their country with pride. Considering the neighborhood we are in, completely surrounded by enemies on all sides, its no wonder Pakistan has been embroiled in so many conflicts.

Dont be a mouth piece for Pakistans enemies.

Re: baloch burned Pakistani flag

I wonder if that also includes Afghanistan, our brothers by blood.

Re: Nawab Akbar Bugti Killed (Merged)

In Pakistan, these operations are carried out by army under a military government or dictatorship. All political parties and leaders oppose such actions.
In India, such operations are carried out by political governments as part of political process.

These are very different situations.

Re: baloch burned Pakistani flag

The problem is the internal conflict thanks largely to army rule. If provinces had even as much autonomy as American states have, this latest incident may not have happened.

But the thekaydars of Pakistan have already decided on what is good for the rest of us and killing 80 yr old leaders of an oppressed ethnic minority is one of those “good things”.

Bugti may have been the worst human being in the world, but it is also a fact that the Balochis are an oppressed nation and the development schemes help non Balochis far more then any chowkidar jobs Balochis get out of it. And trust me, no one is going to make Balochis head of Gawadar port anytime soon. Those big positions are reserved for “special” people.

Re: Nawab Akbar Bugti Killed (Merged)

He was in the first batch of CSS officers and probably was in the top 5 I have heard. He had his early education from Karachi Grammar School and then went to Aitchison College Lahore for his College education. He had his graduation from the Oxford University. He was amongst the brilliant students of the Oxford. A true patriot and a man of highest convictions who believed in the sovereignty of country and demanded level playing field for all the federating units of Pakistan.

Re: baloch burned Pakistani flag

Hate to tell you this, but Afghans are not Punjabis brothers by blood.

Re: baloch burned Pakistani flag

We should not judge on what Pakistani media portrays of our peple. He was not a worst human being. he had morals which most politicians and people lack in out country. We may disagree with his way of fighting for his peoples’ cause but thats our opinion which too has bias to begin with.
I know that you and I are at different wave length on so far the rights of indigenous people are concerned but let me reiterate that no one has the right to dislodge people living at a place for thousands and thousands of years and accomodate others. Economic rights of Balochis and Sindhis have been compromised since the creation of Pakistan which is a fact we should acknowledge and work towards lightening its burden.

Re: BREAKING NEWS - Nawab Akbar Bugti killed

you cant be sure about that...ask the israelis :) .
anybody who knows pakistan well would say it wont do any good, he was a tyrant no doubt and unnecessarily made martyr he was 80 and could have died in few months time being on the run, their resistance needed a hero and they got it thanks to Dumbs in higher echeleon of power , you cant expect anything wise from them, first they fed him with crores and now they killed him.
i am sure musharraf didnt want that himself and was done squarely to make more troubles for him and there shall be more troubles.

Re: Nawab Akbar Bugti Killed (Merged)

With comments like above, no wonder why the Baloch have such a hate for Punjabistan

While some in Punjab metaphorically jump for joy over the killing of the 79 yr old leader, the Baloch continue to mourn and protest.

QUETTA: Angry mobs protesting the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti cut off the main highway connecting Quetta to Karachi at four points and another heading west to Iran on Wednesday as the number of arrests in four days rose to nearly 700, said Balochistan IG Chaudhry Yaqub.

Meanwhile, suspected militants blew up a railway line in Mastung district while protesters set fire to a government savings office and half a dozen shops in Khuzdar.

About 200 people blocking a bridge with trucks on the highway to Karachi lifted their siege after eight hours following talks between protest leaders and government officials. Boulders and crudely erected barricades blocked another road linking Karachi with Gwadar.

The blockades prevented many workers from entering Quetta, forcing markets, banks and shops to close. Dozens of buses were parked at a terminal in Quetta unable to leave for Karachi and Lahore, according to an AP cameraman at the scene.

Baloch National Party chief Attaullah Mengal warned in a statement that the strikes would continue until the government handed over Bugti’s body to his family. But police chief Yaqub said life was returning to normal and witnesses said some shops were open in Quetta although traffic was thin. Authorities also extended the closure of schools for three more days in Quetta, officials said.

The authorities have arrested 670 people for inciting violence and for attacks on public and private property since late Saturday, said Yaqub. Police arrested 40 people from various areas following a blast in a Hub hotel.

Meanwhile, a strike was observed across Sindh, particularly in Baloch-populated areas. Pakistan Railways Quetta Division said that rail traffic remained functional in Balochistan on August 28, 29 and 30. Also, the army flew a group of reporters to the cave by helicopter to brief them on work to retrieve Bugti’s body. agencies

Re: BREAKING NEWS - Nawab Akbar Bugti killed

You are right, this opinion is shared en masse by all learned Pakistanis

Baloch nationalism needed a martyr and the generals have now provided it with one, and a very potent one too. The consequences and ramifications of Bugti’s death in a military operation will be deep and far reaching, not just for Balochistan, but also for the other smaller provinces and for the country. It is sure to shake the very foundations of the Musharraf government. Political leaders across the spectrum, including those from the ruling Muslim League, have unanimously denounced the killing.

Re: Nawab Akbar Bugti Killed (Merged)

Yup, and that is why thousands of Balochi fighters are now surrendering, because they know that Bugti was misleading them.

Six Marri commanders along with 2000 supporters surrender in Kohlu

Six important Marri commanders along with their 2000 supporters here Tuesday surrendered their arms to district authorities at Tadri, some 140 kilometers off from Kohlu town. The commanders included Waidera Gazi Khan Marri, Waidera Bakht Ali Sherani Marri, Kari Khan Marri, Ruba Goryani Marri, Waidera Azeem alias Bhuda and Waidera Shamboo Khan Marri. These commanders were stated to be operating Bhambor, Hashpur and Dango Khan ‘Farari Camps’ in the district. The arms included 75 MM Recoilless rifle, 12.7 MM gun, LMG, RPG, RPG-7, SMG, LMG, automatic grenade launchers and other lethal weapons which they used against the officials of LEAs and national installations. Speaking on the occasion the DCO said it is for the first time in the history of the country that the people from Marri tribe have voluntarily laid their arms and announced to support the government. The only reason behind their surrender is that they have been inspired by the government’s sincerity to develop their areas and ensure all civic amentias to them at their doorsteps. He said "Marri people are still leading an inhuman life due to indifference and intransigence of their tribal elders who always offered tough resistance to the government development efforts in their areas,”. As a result, the people of entire district are deprived of even safe drinking water.**“ The tribal chieftains forced these people to fight by either keeping their family. He said the people of the area could not even dream to enjoy communication, health and education facilities in the presence of their tribal elders. **“

He said President Musharraf was firstever head of the country’s history who announced Special Development Package worth Rs. 1.5 billion for Kholu district during his recent visit. Under the package scores of development schemes in education, health, road and water sectors are being implemented in the district. The schemes included setting up of a 50-bed hospital, construction of five mettle roads, a boys degree college, an inter girls college and various water schemes, he said and added completion of these schemes will greatly help end the backwardness from the district, he said. To a question about number of Farari Camps in the district, the DCO said before the government action there existed 14 camps but all have been cleared during the last eight months by law enforcement agencies. “Provision of basic living amenities to backward Marri tribe is the top most priority of the government,” he added.1 The surrendering commanders, speaking on the occasion, said that they quit their tribal elders and joined hands with the government after being impressed by its massive development projects in the province and in Kohlu. They said that their tribal head never worked for the development of their area and added that they were working under compulsion due to extra-ordinary power of the tribal chief in the area which they have lost now. They said that they want development in their area and for this purpose they would extend all possible cooperation to the government.

Bugti’s murder was also a signal to all those who could have voted against Shaukat Aziz. The victory of Aziz is indeed a new trend in Pakistan politics. In case a prime minister haveneed to ensure his position in assembly, Kill a senior opposition leader to warn all those who can oppose.

And this is not limited to politicians, read 2 consecutive columns of Arshad Ahmed Haqqani, a senior journalist. In just 2 days, he has switched his attention from Bugti’s death towards Pubjabis. http://www.jang.net/editorial/show_article.asp?id=Irniwnbmsuk

29-8-2006 : …Bugti incident…
31-8-2006 : Bad attitude towads Punjabis in Balochistan

As if it is Bugti (THIS TIME TOO)who is responsible for this…:grumpy:

Re: BREAKING NEWS - Nawab Akbar Bugti killed

By the way, almost a week has passed since the incident and I guess no one has dared to file a compaint about this incident yet, and government is keen to call this an era of justice and development.

Re: Nawab Akbar Bugti Killed (Merged)

Despite the gullible and naive thinking of posters like ‘pahlavi’, learned Pakistani’s continue to warn how this murder will incite the Balochis against Pakistan even more, and cause resenment throughout all of Pakistan

Press unease at Baloch killings

Editorial in THE NATION

The storm of protests and resentment that Nawab Bugti’s killing let loose on Sunday has not abated; rather, it has gained strength. By not handing over the body to the family so far, the authorities have given rise to a needless controversy and speculations about its whereabouts … It is not clear why the government let the situation develop into such a sorry mess… when time-honoured, effective means of negotiations and peaceful settlement of contentious points were available.

Hussain Haqqani in THE NATION

The consequences of Nawab Bugti’s assassination are likely to be monumental… The mindset of Pakistan’s ruling establishment is vice-regal and a holdover from British colonial Raj… The army’s intervention in Pakistan’s politics has created the unfortunate situation where Pakistan’s army is responsible for killing more Pakistanis as enemies of the country than it has eliminated foreign troops with whom Pakistan has gone to war.

Zubeida Mustafa in DAWN

Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti is dead. His violent death at the hands of the Pakistan army in a targeted military operation has given Balochistan the martyr that it needed at this hour to rally people round the nationalist movement and inject fresh vigour into it. Ironically, in his death Bugti’s contribution to Baloch nationalism may prove to be greater than his role in life… Today, what is at stake is the Baloch aspiration to have decision-making power in their own affairs and on issues that concern them.

Editorial in PAKISTAN

Agitation has continued in Balochistan and other parts of the country over the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti… it is necessary to overcome the reasons that give rise to extremism. An inflexible attitude should not be adopted so as to maintain the writ of the government and the political process; moderate behaviour should be adopted to calm down the peoples’ reaction. Political problems can never be resolved through the gun… These issues can be settled through a political process and dialogue.

Editorial in ISLAM

We say the killing of Nawab Bugti is part of a big conspiracy to harm the solidarity of Pakistan. The contradictory statements issued by the government regarding the incident are strengthening this belief. We say the government and civil and military policymakers should reflect on the repercussions of Bugti’s killing and should take effective steps to control the situation in Balochistan. They should also develop a strategy to combat the conspiracies being developed there.

Editorial in NAWA-I-WAQT

India has condemned Bugti’s killing, saying political issues cannot be resolved through the use of force. The Afghan National Assembly also held heated discussions over the incident… We say this is an eye-opener for the government, which should push for reconciliation instead of provoking the people further. Talks and confidence building with the people is the need of the hour and the government should take the lead.

Editorial in MASHRIQ

A US military journal has published a map regarding the geographical redefinition of Pakistan. On the map, Balochistan was shown as a free state. Whether this is realistic or not, it certainly reflects the US dream of a Greater Balochistan. In order to combat such conspiracies… we should not kill our people but embrace them.

Editorial in JINNAH

In view of the gravity of the present situation, the government should take all the political parties into its confidence and devise a joint strategy to improve the situation in the larger interests of the country so that the political parties do not use Bugti’s killing as a political issue.

Editorial in AUSAF

We feel that the statements being made by the rulers in this highly sensitive situation amount to fuelling the fire, whereas in the aftermath of Bugti’s killing what is required is the use of wisdom… We would also request the opposition leaders to avoid committing mistakes… and sit together and consider how Pakistan can be saved from dangerous internal chaos.

Editorial in KHABRAIN

Now that riots and demonstrations are taking place in Baluchistan and Karachi as a reaction to the Balochistan operation, it has been observed that the opposition parties are also supporting this turmoil… The opposition has the right to oppose the government, but it should examine whether this right is not being used against Pakistan.

Nusrat Mirza in AUSAF

The Army men like to do everything using power, but they have no idea of the power of negotiations. Certainly Sardar Akbar Bugti was an arrogant man. After all, he was a Baloch tribal elder, but he was not a man who could not be handled… In interaction with him over two years, I reached the conclusion that he loved Pakistan from the bottom of his heart.
Editorial in NAWA-I-WAQT

There is a need to extinguish the fire and normalise the situation, but the government has made an incomprehensible announcement to continue the military operation without taking parliament into its confidence and establishing contact with the Baloch politicians… the insistence on continuing the operation may further aggravate the situation and become a means of increasing the sense of deprivation of the Baloch people.
