Natural Tips for You and Your House

Some ideas for avoiding chemicals in the house. I use these all myself, I just think we are too surrounded by chemicals these days and it might not be the best thing for us.

These ideas are useful especially if you have children with sensitive skin:

  1. 1/2 cup of Plain household vinegar in the washing machine instead of fabric softener will soften your clothes and they won’t smell like vinegar.

  2. Vinegar can be used as a glass polish. The smell will fade as it dries

  3. Soda bicarbonate can be added to a wash (1/2 cup) to make whites whiter.

  4. Soak dirty clothes in warm water and soda bicarb to help remove stains

  5. Soak dishes with burnt food with some water, soba bicarb and vinegar. In an hour or so the burnt food will rub right off

  6. USe soda bicarb instead of chemical deodorant. Apply to the underarms after a shower or bath. I’ve used this method for a year now without needing to go back to chemicals. It may be worth noting for breastfeeding mothers.

  7. Use olive oil and almond oil after a shower instead of baby oil. It has the same result and is 100% natural

  8. bags of lavendar and cloves in your cupboards will keep moths away

  9. In addition to environmentally friendly soaps, most supermarkets will sell old fashioned soap flakes for the washing machine. These usually have very few ingredients and are all natural. In my experience they are the cheapest option and work just as well as big name brands. sprinkle over clothes instead of adding to the powder compartment, as the soap flakes turn gooy otherwise.

  10. If your child has alergies, natural food colours for cakes can be made from:

  • boiling down grape juice (purple)
  • boiling down orange juice (orange/yellow)
    *boiling down pomegranate juice (red/pink)
  • mashing up mint leaves and straining the juice (green)

the colours won’t be as bright but at least you know what the hell it is you’re feeding your kids. I use these methods to ice cookies for my little kid cousins.

Can’t think of any more, but please feel free to add your own tips!

hey they r cool, thanks

Re: Natural Tips for You and Your House

ill definitely use the one for burnt dishes (well hopefully i wont burn any dishes!) :)

Great list!!!

I use sesame oil out of the shower and it's terrific----it actually absorbs into the skin pretty quickly, too. If the sesame smell is objectionable to you, Neutrogena produces a sesame oil that has a very light scent added.

Question on the vinegar in the wash---does this not have a bleaching effect? I'd be hesitant to put it in with colors...

6) USe soda bicarb instead of chemical deodorant. Apply to the underarms after a shower or bath. I've used this method for a year now without needing to go back to chemicals. It may be worth noting for breastfeeding mothers.

u mean its gud for breastfeeding mom's. used it try or add water in it. thnks

So long as you don't throw it straight on the clothes, no problem. Add it to the washing machine compartment where you would normally put fabric softener

Use it dry. I dust it on my underarms like talcum powder. I started doing this after a very young colleague of mine got diagnosed with breast cancer. I had heard in the past that the chemicals in deodorants are not good for women because your armpits are so close to your lymph nodes, which in turn are close to the breast and if you are breastfeeding you should avoid chemicals as much as you can.

Chemical deodorants and anti perspirants contain aluminium salts which block your pores to stop you sweating and are neurotoxins! We are supposed to sweat, it's natural!!

I tried various solutions and so far the sodium bicarb works the best. You put it on once and stay fresh all day. Maybe a touch up here and there but it really does work.
