What happened to it? The people of ancient times didn’t have access to the bazillions of beauty products that we do today. How come they still had the natural beauty whereas we must rely on skin care routines and whatnot to stay looking good.
Re: Natural beauty?
is it a science question??
i thought you were gonn write about symmetry of human face...the 'beauty ratio'...n stuff...:(
people always use the means available in their era to beautify themeslves.....so each generation tries its best.......no difference between us and predecessors.
Re: Natural beauty?
What happened to it?
Well the old tried and tested stuff is still around and works wonders like besan, ubtan, herbal masks. BUt how many people still use it when customers are promised clean and clear skin and then there are so many whitening creams and facewashes full of too much chemicals. I think people of ancient times had more 'khaalis ghizaen' then. Nowadays we consume too much processed foods and refined everything. Skin does get affected in many ways...
Re: Natural beauty?
I think this is best for the history section ![]()
Okay just kidding…
I believe historical things have just become victims of modern fashion trends… thats all.
People still use Kohl and other ancient cosmetics and I still highly prize my knowledge on anceint things like that but to be honest these days finding something new always gets more audience than telling people they are wearing somthing wondrous and prized by ancients…
If I claimed to have found some new plant extract from the amazon that made natural looking blonde dye or skin whitner everyone would flock to buy it…
If I try selling them a product and tellign them it’s been around for yonks they probably wont bother.
Re: Natural beauty?
Nomi, I try to keep threads in science quite diverse. Not-so-technical threads are good sometimes.
I think it's all about what we eat these days and the water, air pollution in general. Our drinking water isn't the same as it was years ago. There are over 600 types of one particular group of chemical contaminants alone. We are destroying our bodies and our planet. No wonder.

Re: Natural beauty?
Healthy is beautiful. Psychologically beautiful is whatever characteristics that may reflect you are healthy and fertile. This characteristic may be clean and clear skin, long and shiny hair, good hygeine, and neatness. Its evolutionary as well and dependant on era and cultural values.....
I'll tell you naturally shaped eyebrows, natural facial features, and frame of face is the best, don't ever change it.
Re: Natural beauty?
Women in ancient times used rouge and kohl and wigs to enhance their beauty. In Europe....they'd cake their faces with white powder that contained harmful substances. They'd pluck their hairlines so that their foreheads would appear higher...so they too meddled with nature. So, although they didn't have the knowledge that we do today about the skin and aging etc......they did have their own methods and remedies for beautification. You'd be surprised to read about the crazy superstitions that many remedies in the Medieval Europe were based upon. People back then did have their own "skin care routines." Cleopatra is said to have bathed in milk.
Another thing to consider is that the wealthy women could afford to treat their skins with expensive ingredients such as milk, honey, or some crushed powder of rubies/pearls/etc that formed their beauty routine. Women of the lower class.....let's say peasants....had to deal with the effects of the sun beating down on their skin....and hard labor/weather conditions taking their toll on the skin.
Back then....maybe skin products contained fewer chemicals/preservatives than they do today....hence more natural products. Diet was less processed back then.
Also, there's nothing "natural" about eye liner/kohl, blush, lipstick, foundation, eye shadow. If you want to get down to the root of "natural".....it wouldn't be makeup or skin routines...............it boils down to a person's natural features.
Re: Natural beauty?
Olive Oil was used for so many things (I didn’t even know that till recently)… they showed this program on NAT geo… how applying olive oil to the face killed all the bacteria and impurities with in a few minutes… women used olive oil for everything… for hair, lashes, to get crystal clear whites of the eyes, to improve natural estrogen in certain areas of their body… etc. etc. olive oil is just so awesome!!

Re: Natural beauty?
-concept of beauty changes
-throughout history there is something or other that people have done to stay "beautiful", it may seem absurd to us today...just like some things from today will seem absurd centuries later.
-our lifestyles affect our overall appearance and sometimes contradict what we consider beautiful.
Re: Natural beauty?
I think beauty products have been used for centuries, for example even the Egyptian queens had intense beauty regimes using things like kohl, red pigments, perfumes, hair oils etc.
