A Karachite account holder of National Bank of Pakistan deposited a cheque on 5 December 2007 for realization and credit into his account. According to his words despite lapse of six weeks in this 21st century when no bank transfers cash on back of a mule or a donkey anymore, the National Bank of Pakistan which claims itself one of the “best and efficient” bank in the country has not credited it. On each visit he gets a new invented excuse from the Branch starting from lack of communications to the shortage of staff, then blaming law and order situation, disrupted train service and till now the last shortage of demand draft voucher book. What will be the next new excuse he will tell later. He however still hopes that the NBP will “improve” its service. This account holder is wrong. The fact is the service of NBP has already improved to highest standards due to “good” and efficient leadership workability of its present President for which good work the President himself took for himself Rs. 500000 as award. A Lahori pensioner of NBP this week in these columns said that his Bank earned Rs. 26 billion profit but simultaneously waived of Rs. 12 million to professional loan defaulters. The pensioner says the Chief Executive of NBP is a blue eyed of the President General Musharraf. (all have always been – Nawaz Sharif paid his blue eyed NBP Chief Executive 5 years salary in advance thus killing the basic foundation of the institution – from his Ittefaq Foundry he never gave advance even for 6 months to any one). This Lahori pensioner Mir Muhammad Idress while accusing that that the Chief Executive has not only himself looted the bank by awarding himself a Rs. 70 million bonus, also says the poor pensioners wallow in miseries. He raises a stupid question that if the Directors can why can not the pensioners also reap the harvest of the Bank’s high financial earnings. He prays the Chief Executive and his Board for sympathetic consideration for grant of pension to pensioners. Maulana Abul Kalam an eminent leader was then India’s Education Minister. Home Minister personally went to inform him that the Government had decided to confer Maulana Bharat Ratna award. Maulana straightaway refused saying how could they pin the medals on themselves when they were the ones to decide who should get them. If our Edhi can today wish to have US nationality through Green Card instead of multiple 5 year multiple visa, I am sure today Maulana would had also awarded himself a Rs. 100 billion award had he been Chief Executive of our National Bank. Chief Justice Mr. Iftikhar Mohammad Choundhary took a suo moto notice of this self award. During the first pubic interest hearing the kind chief justice remarked that instead of self awarding why should this big amount not go to the pensioners. The case was under process when to save his blue eyed friend NBP Chief and also to save his own and Shaukat Aziz’s Islamabad Farm plots obtained in violation of rules, General Musharraf off seated the deposed the Chief Justice on advice of Attorney General Abdul Quyyum. The General’s other blue eyed the chief justice Dogar has last week duly acting faithfully in return has saved General’s and other big wigs plots. My question is did thse Karachite account holder and Lahori pensioner came out on the road for a few minutes to joint with protesting advocates in favour of that man who got himself unemployed only saving this account holder and this pensioner. Certainly they did not come out even to offer drinking water to the protesting lawyers let alone to join protests. So how can these two hope sympathetic consideration? The advocate S,M. Zafar once said people would have to take their rights themselves as no body would deliver them. There is still a little hope if this Karachite account holder and Lahore pensioner in coming elections vote only to that person who promises with them that on entering the assembly he would raise his loud voice in favour of deposed Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Choudhary and his colleges. Otherwise prepare yourself your NBP going in hands of some other looters under the umbrella of foreign investors who are in fact just third parties for our national looters.
