this question has been bugging me, how do u identify “spanish” art as opposed to “french” art, or is it “european”.
Take a person of Indian/australian (both) heritage in Switerland, who is an artist, to which country would that art belong? Would it be definaed as American, Indian, Australian, or would the leaning be more toward the TYPE of art ie, modernists etc.
Does this make sense?
I just want to know how art is classified and why is tehre a tendency of artists to be of the same clan within a country.
i think it would lean towards what kind of art it is..
i was reading up on some pakistani artists yesterday.. and all of them regardless of being pakistani, didnt say that their art was "pakistani". The art itself was described as modern, accrylic etc (i dont know art terms)
i guess they would describe the person being of pakistan origin, but the art itself wouldnt..

by clan = produce the sme kinda work
well there are certain peculiarities associated with Art anywhere it may be. these would include the fact that art often thrives on creating exclusive cliques who own it simply cuz they went to falan falan art institute.
often, the clan you talk of is very real. like you have students who emulate a teacher who made it big.
then there is a 'current' stream of art going around, that every one wants to assoicate to, considering kay thats whats accepted and more modern or progressed from previous art, these days.
so producing modernist paintings in a time of post-modernisim is a big no-no.
the whole idea of progression in the field is such that kay everyone gets the 'same base' in an art institute and then builds on it, and even when they are building on it in a new fashion the fact that they got the same base makes their work similar or of a similar genre.
the current stream or art, can be localised, that is may have to do with a region so you might find say singapore kay artists very different from some other but the similarity with local artists will often be seen.
oh as someone above mentioned. art is often boradly categorized through the medium you work with. like oil, water, acrylic, mixed media( photos included).
fine arts is a narrower category of Art.
but modernist and stuff generally applies to paintings done in oil and water.
