I have my nose pierced as well. I wear a small stud not one of those rings/nath. I haven’t heard any of the stories mentioned. Although I’ve heard that the nath/ring was worn by prostitutes.

^I have heard/read about the slavery association, but I thought that it also included the nose pins (and not just the rings). It's a very common piercing...probably second to ears....and done mostly for adornment, so I don't think it's such a big deal. To each his own.
